No, it is hard to imagine. (Just as an aside, the Mayans did not necessarily believe the end of a time cycle was catastrophic... it just started a new cycle.)
I think if we have to put up with it for 3 more years, we will all find alternative things to believe in... the Tea Party will be just a face in the crowd.
That'll confirm for me that the Mayans were correct...the world really is going to end in 2012.
