... Europe continues to reap the bitter fruit of America’s unwillingness to
lead a full-blown war against Islamic State in its Syrian and Iraqi
heartland, and of Europe’s inability to provide its own leadership in
the Obama Administration’s vacuum. The cost of that failure will be
tragically measured this year in empty chairs at Christmas.
Sorry, Wall Street Journal. What you are seeing is the karma, the pay-back for your gruesome support of the illegal war in Iraq. These attacks are the fruit of your own perfidy, your own lack of moral spine.
And you have learned nothing, proving that what goes around certain minds comes around again and again and again.
Is it the merest coincidence that the truck looks like the one driven by the T-1000 in Terminator 2: Judgement Day? The one that was driven down into the ditch at the intersection of Plummer Street and Hayvenhurst Avenue:
I do not think I have ever seen the results of the autopsies that were inevitably done on terrorists who were killed during their attacks. I think it would be interesting to see what drugs were in the terrorists' bodies.
Why no toxicology reports? What reason is there for supressing that information?
Bomb blasts in the Syrian cities of Homs and Damascus have left at least 140 people dead, monitors and state media say.
At least four blasts struck the southern Damascus suburb of Sayyida Zeinab, killing at least 83 people, state media said.
Earlier in Homs, 57 people, mainly civilians, were killed in a double car bombing, a monitoring group reported.
So-called Islamic State (IS) said it carried out the attacks in both cities.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State John Kerry has said a "provisional agreement" has been reached with Russia on a partial truce in the conflict...
The Damascus bombing was in the Sayyida Zainab district, home of the shrine to Sayyida (Lady) Zainab, daughter of 'Ali زينب بنت علي
and it is this 'Ali, the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet, whom the Shi'a consider to be the correct successor to the caliphate and not Mu'awiyah and then Mu'awiyah's son, Yazid, whose troops killed Hussein - the son of 'Ali - at Karbala.
{ http://www.ezsoftech.com/stories/sayyida.zainab.asp Birthday of Sayyida Zainab (sa) is observed as Nurse's Day in Iran... A nurse's occupation is not an ordinary one. Nursing is a sacred and valuable profession. A nurse does not work for money or material benefits, for the wages she receives do not compensate of her untainted labors. When a nurse sees that her patient's life is in danger, she forgets everything and becomes selfless. Birthday of Sayyida Zainab (sa) is observed as Nurse's Day in Iran. At the height of the Islamic month of Muharram, in the year 61, after Hijrah, on the night of Ashura, when the devilish enemy set the Ahlul Bayt's (as) tent on fire and drove the children to the desert in the night, Sayyida Zainab (sa) tended women and children in a half-burnt tent, shared in their sorrow with patience and endurance, and nursed the feverish patient of Karbala, Imam Sajjad (as)... She is a model of resistance and sacrifice.. ...with special characteristics gathered within her, it is as if she were the protector of moral values, law abidance, the protector and executor of our higher duties, sympathetic, kind, conscientious, independent, shouldering responsibility, hard-working and untiring. Sayyida Zainab (sa) was not only a nurse for women and children. She nursed those who had suffered in body and soul, those whose clothing and skin had burned in the frightening tent fire at dusk on Ashura, those who had suffered mentally, those who had heard rejoicing in their miseries. This nursing began at dusk on the day of Ashura and continued to Kufah, Karbala and Medina...}
At the end of January, 2016, Damascus witnessed a similar bombing:
Islamic State bombers have killed more than 60 people near Syria’s holiest Shia shrine in Damascus as the country’s main opposition group met the UN mediator, Staffan de Mistura, for the first time.
Representatives of the Saudi-backed Higher Negotiation Committee (HNC) – which includes political and militant opponents of President Bashar al-Assad – warned they may yet walk away from the Geneva talks unless the suffering of civilians in the five-year conflict was eased.
The head of the Syrian government delegation said that the blasts in Damascus, which the interior ministry blamed on a car bomb and two suicide bombers, merely confirmed the opposition’s terrorist links – even though Isis has been excluded from the talks...
The birth date of Lady Zainab, a day when Shi'a may come to the shrine in Damascus to pay their respects, fell on February 14, 2016, a date almost directly between the two attacks. It was as if ISIS - or some ISIS surrogate - sought to maximize the damage and had some deadly glitches, jumping the gun in January and being a week late in February, thus bookending the birth date of Lady Zainab with a bloody rain of mortal remains... invoking a memory of Karbala.

I guess people have to try out a bunch of new religious expressions, ranging from New Age to Yoga to EST to Head-Chopping. I mean, the Aztecs did it, didn't they?

... Taking a page from the Islamic group ISIS operating in neighboring
Syria, a small group of young fundamentalist Jews influenced by radical
religious leaders target Christian sites as centers of heretical idol
worship and unwelcome missionary activity. In the past three years, a
dozen churches and monasteries have been bombed, burned, or vandalized.
Until the June firebombing, no one was charged in any of these
incidents...
It is not Islam. It is not Judaism. It is a new religion in the Cradle of Civilization that needs human sacrifice.
It is the Great Achievement of our age, and it is the Great Disaster, too, to discover now at this time of the 21st century that Armageddon is not essentially Armies that Clash by Day and Night....
It is the ceaseless invocation of a new Moloch who desires bloody human hecatombs.
Destruction has been discovered to be Religion!

I did a post on how the killers of the Dawabsha family might beat the rap lest Israel intelligence community risk divulging classified info, and discretion and protection of spys and moles is the better part of valor.
Reading an article in Tablet this morning made me realize that (1) perhaps my post was very one-sided, and (2) perhaps the Tablet post may have some details wrong, and (3) maybe details are wrong on both sides, and (4) the devil is in the details, and (5) the devil is in the general outlines, too.
Yet another suspect, Tzur Israel Bengusi, a notorious extremist from Kiryat Arba, has been arrested as a member of “The Rebellion” settler terror cell.
His name and arrest are under gag order in Israel. He has been arrested previously and placed under restrictions by the Shabak for prior acts of violence.
Elisha Odess, one of the suspected killers of Dawabshe family. Caption: “We only have the Lord Blessed be He. We only fear Him.”
Israel has been awash in news and controversy about the four suspects in the Dawabsheh arson murders. Though their names are under gag order in Israel, I’ve reported all four of them here. Their lawyers and the terror support group, Honenu, have complained vigorously about alleged torture inflicted on their clients. This is treatment routinely inflicted on Palestinian security detainees imprisoned for far less severe crimes. Settlers and their facilitators never utter a word of complaint about this system, only caring for the welfare of “their own,” that is, Jews.
There appears to be a political conflict between the intelligence apparatus and the settler lobby. The latter persuaded defense minister Bogie Yaalon, who is a close ally of theirs, to release a statement a few days ago that implied the case might be dropped for lack of evidence. He said that the suspects had confessed to lesser acts of terror, but that Shabak came up empty regarding the murders. I took that as a shot across the bow of the Shabak and police on behalf of the settlers.
Today, 1,000 settler supporters rallied in Jerusalem near Yoram Cohen’s home. Nearly 100 of them tried to physically storm the site, but were prevented by the police. In the many years I’ve written this blog I’ve never heard of protesters storming the home of any intelligence chief...
Let's get Mr. Netanyahu back to speak to Congress again.
(I do not know enough about French politics, but I would guess that since this is the first round of the elections, the extended index fingers in the photo above are sort of a half-victory V sign.)
I am reading Le Figaro this morning about the first round of elections in France. The Front National has done better than ever, and the electorate moved away from the Socialists and closer to the far right.
Paris (AFP) - One is a pragmatist: a 47-year-old lawyer by training who has steered France's far-right National Front (FN) from pariah status to mainstream.
The other is an ideologue: her 25-year-old niece, a Roman Catholic traditionalist whose easy smile and youthful good looks belie a stance on abortion, homosexuality and Islam that critics say is dangerous or sectarian.
On Sunday, Marine Le Pen and Marion Marechal-Le Pen -- respectively the daughter and grand-daughter of the FN's firebrand founder, Jean-Marie Le Pen -- established themselves as major players in France's political landscape...
After the Paris attack, this is not a total surprise.
Politics is a Group process.
As such, it is neither good nor bad.
What the group in power decides to do has the possibility of being good or bad.
How far any group - far right or far left - will go is not known, although Jean-Marie Le Pen, the patriarch, made a post on Twitter concerning the fact that Christian Estrosi, a member of the République Solidaire party and deputy mayor of Nice, was trailing the Front National candidate, Marion Maréchal-Le Pen (mentioned above), in the polling in the region Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur...
(To mock the score of Christian Estrosi (36%), candidate of République Solidaire [RS] was trailing Front National [FN] candidate Marion-Maréchal Le Pen (41%) in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, the old octogenarian posted on Twitter a video of the deputy mayor of Nice dancing with some Orthodox Jews... )
and one wonders who or what is the terror which haunts or vivifies old man Le Pen.
It should be pointed out that Marine Le Pen pretty much kicked the old man, Jean-Marie, out of any semblance of influence in the party a while ago.
So, things can always get out of hand.
Faith in God is a solitary pursuit. Group dynamics are politics, and politics and religion do not mix, for religion is overwhelmed by Power and Compulsion.
As William Ralph Inge wrote:
Types Of Christian Saintliness, 1915, London, page 36
Even though Protestantism is the democracy of religion, it may lead to a dictatorship of the righteous, such as Calvin established in Zurich and others.
Once democracy loses its emphasis on the individual, it loses almost everything, because as it swings to group reactions, group politics, group opinions... , then it becomes stagnant and oppressive.
The greatest weakness of a democratic society is wild swings of group, public sentiments.
The Athenians experienced it; when Mytilene wished to leave the Delian League and revolted, the Athenians voted in assembly to kill all the men of Mytilene and to sell the women and children into slavery, and sent a ship to the troops at Mytilene to carry out this command.
The next day, realizing the unprecedented barbarity of their actions, they reversed the vote, and sent a second ship after the first, but it arrived too late to save the Mytilenians.
Hitler knew the weakness of democracies.
Terrorists know the weakness, too: drive the people of democratic countries into paroxysms of fear and anger; make them give up their individual morality and embrace the amorality of group dynamics of revenge and the illusive satisfaction of horrible punishment to instill fear into ones' enemies.
If you lose the individual, you lose God, you lose morals and ethics, you lose democracy, you lose everything in the end in an unceasing dream time of night terrors.
Anatoly Zemlyanka, 28, came from 'normal' family in Noyabrsk, and was into Thai boxing and karate.
A video was posted this week showing the supposed 'execution' of 23 year old Russian citizen Magomed Khasiev, from Chechnya, by Islamic extremists in Syria.
He had travelled to the Middle East in support of the Islamic State, although in a 'confession' before his apparent killing he claimed he acted as an informant for the FSB, the Russian secret service. Sources have indicated there is no proof of this claim by a man who had refused to speak to his adoptive mother in Chechnya over his trip to Syria, believing she would disapprove.
Next it was revealed that the Russian-speaking executioner was from Noyabrsk, the largest city in the energy-rich Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Region.
On Friday, the Russian media identified the executioner as Anatoly Zemlyanka, a former Thai Boxing competitor, who had also loved karate while he studied at Tyumen State University in 2004 - 2009.
Friends said that in his fifth year he began to communicate with Muslims and converted to Islam. His mother is believed to be an Orthodox Christian...
In January, 2007, the Bataclan Theater in Paris received threats, reportedly since the owners were Jewish. Le Figaro reported in 2011 that there were still threats.
So why can't we provide 8 years of security for every place - not just government offices - that Islamists do not like?
Eight years?!
What do you think Sun Tzu (The Art of War)would say about our War on Terror?
“Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win”
“There is no instance of a nation benefitting from prolonged warfare.” (like 14 years since the World Trade Center)
“One may know how to conquer without being able to do it. ”
“There are roads which must not be followed, armies which must not be attacked, towns which must not be besieged, positions which must not be contested, commands of the sovereign which must not be obeyed.”
What did we do this week? We had a media slobber-fest over killing Jihadi John.
Then we lost over a hundred people in Paris.
We can't even begin to talk about ending our support of the destabilization of Syria, and Mr. Obama is going to find that this growing disaster everywhere - not just the Middle East - will tarnish his legacy as sure as the Iraq War did George W. Bush's.
And think about the USA...
How would you like to be flying for Thanksgiving or Christmas?
If you remember, my wife ran into a serious slow down in Baltimore three weeks ago, and that was before all this happened. People will stay home, and the parts of the economy devoted to travel will slide into recession.
We shall sit around the fire and cling fervidly to religion and guns.
You can kiss any form of gun control good-bye.
I'm going to learn to shoot a handgun... just in case eight years from now someone wants to shoot up the movie house I'm sitting in.
Portion emphasized: For in January 2007, The Bataclan Theater was the target of threats from Islamist movements...
So apparently the Bataclan Theater has been targeted for at least 8 years...
There are many more comments in the French press about this.
Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov confers with Russian
Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in Grozny. (RIA Novosti)
Ask Google that very question.
Mr. Putin has an informed opinion. You should have yours, too.
Go to "Search Tools" and click, then go to the time section, which should be headed "Any time" at first, then choose "custom range" and set the time range from January 2001 (before 9/11) to December 31, 2010 (before the Boston Marathon bombing).
According to a letter published on a Chechen website (September 15, 2004), the leader of the main Chechen rebel movement Shamil Basayev has claimed responsibility for the Beslen school siege in Northern Ossetia. While formally acknowledging his role, Basayev blames Russian Forces for triggering the massacre which led to the death of at least 320 hostages, many of them children. (The authenticity of the letter remains to be established.)
The Beslen tragedy has all the finger prints of a carefully led intelligence operation. There is ample evidence that the Chechen rebels are supported by Us intelligence. The Kremlin has accused the pro-US government of Georgia of allowing the Chechen rebels to establish a guerrilla base inside its territory in the Pankisi Gorge area . US special forces are stationed in Georgia, which has military cooperation agreements both with Washington and NATO under GUUAM. According to the Independent, the Chechen rebels are supplied out of Azerbaijan, which also lies in the orbit of the Anglo-American axis...
A year before the outbreak of the 1995 war, Basayev was sent to Afghanistan and Pakistan together with his trusted lieutenants for training and indoctrination under the auspices of Pakistan's Interservice Intelligence (ISI).
[In 1994] the Pakistani Inter Services Intelligence arranged for Basayev and his trusted lieutenants to undergo intensive Islamic indoctrination and training in guerrilla warfare in the Khost province of Afghanistan at Amir Muawia camp, set up in the early 1980s by the CIA and ISI and run by famous Afghani warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar. In July 1994, upon graduating from Amir Muawia, Basayev was transferred to Markaz-i-Dawar camp in Pakistan to undergo training in advanced guerrilla tactics. In Pakistan, Basayev met the highest ranking Pakistani military and intelligence officers: Minister of Defense General Aftab Shahban Mirani, Minister of Interior General Naserullah Babar, and the head of the ISI branch in charge of supporting Islamic causes, General Javed Ashraf, (all now retired). High-level connections soon proved very useful to Basayev. (Levon Sevunts, The Gazette,Who's calling the shots?: Chechen conflict finds Islamic roots in Afghanistan and Pakistan, 23 The Gazette, Montreal, 26 October 1999)
Amply documented, the ISI has acted in close consultation with its US counterpart the CIA. The various training camps used to teach guerilla tactics to the Chechen rebel leaders had first been established under CIA-ISI auspices during the Afghan-Soviet war. In other words, these facilities remained in operation in the wake of the Soviet troop withdrawal in 1989...
..."Mr. Putin," continues Le Monde, "reiterated the accusation he had launched in a veiled form against western countries which appear to use double-talk. On the one side, their leaders assure the Russian President of their solidarity in the fight against terrorism. On the other hand, the intelligence services and the military 'who have not abandoned their Cold War prejudices,' in Putin's words -- entertain contacts with those the international press calls the 'rebels.' 'Why are those who emulate Bin Laden called terrorists and the people who kill children, rebels? Where is the logic?' asked Vladimir Putin, and then gave the answer: 'Because certain political circles in the West want to weaken Russia just like the Romans wanted to destroy Carthage.' 'But, continued Putin, "we will not allow this scenario to come to pass.'"...
An enormous head of steam has built up behind the view that President Putin is somehow the main culprit in the grisly events in North Ossetia. Soundbites and headlines such as "Grief turns to anger", "Harsh words for government", and "Criticism mounting against Putin" have abounded, while TV and radio correspondents in Beslan have been pressed on air to say that the people there blame Moscow as much as the terrorists. There have been numerous editorials encouraging us to understand - to quote the Sunday Times - the "underlying causes" of Chechen terrorism (usually Russian authoritarianism), while the widespread use of the word "rebels" to describe people who shoot children shows a surprising indulgence in the face of extreme brutality.
On closer inspection, it turns out that this so-called "mounting criticism" is in fact being driven by a specific group in the Russian political spectrum - and by its American supporters. The leading Russian critics of Putin's handling of the Beslan crisis are the pro-US politicians Boris Nemtsov and Vladimir Ryzhkov - men associated with the extreme neoliberal market reforms which so devastated the Russian economy under the west's beloved Boris Yeltsin - and the Carnegie Endowment's Moscow Centre. Funded by its New York head office, this influential thinktank - which operates in tandem with the military-political Rand Corporation, for instance in producing policy papers on Russia's role in helping the US restructure the "Greater Middle East" - has been quoted repeatedly in recent days blaming Putin for the Chechen atrocities. The centre has also been assiduous over recent months in arguing against Moscow's claims that there is a link between the Chechens and al-Qaida...
(my emphasis on the name "Boris Nemtsov", who was shot to death in Moscow yesterday.)
... Asked by Channel One correspondent Anton Vernitskiy whether the rouble turmoil and economic strains was 'a reckoning for Crimea', he replied: 'No, it is not a reckoning for Crimea. 'It is a reckoning, or rather, it is a payment, for our natural desire to preserve ourselves as a nation, as a civilization, as a state.'
When the Berlin Wall fell and the Soviet Union broke up, Russia 'absolutely opened up to' its Western partners. 'What did we see in return? A direct and full support of terrorism in the North Caucasus.'
Whatever one may think of Mr. Putin, I think he knows that someone in the West with a Cold War mentality has dropped a dime on Russia.
I think that if you are not familiar with Walter Benjamin's idea of the aestheticization of politics, it would now be a good time to do so.
Briefly, from Wikipedia:
The aestheticization of politics was an idea first coined by Walter Benjamin as being a key ingredient to Fascist regimes. In this theory, life and the affairs of living are conceived of as innately artistic, and related to as such politically. Politics are in turn viewed as artistic, and structured like an art form which reciprocates the artistic conception of life being seen as art.
As art.
Life as art.
But remember Thomas de Quincey's pamphlet On Murder Considered As One Of The Fine Arts; art need not be good, nor joyous, nor salubrious for us.
Art can be the work of Francis Bacon and full of terror:
Remember our own pre-occupation with Zombies and Vampires in the cinema. Even though these are aimed to entertain, they are a grisly diseased resurrection myth.
Remember the Shoa.
Remember the bombing of London and of Dresden.
Remember Pearl Harbor and Hiroshima.
What is ISIS but a Snuff Film contorted by rage into an apocalyptic art of the end of time? ISIS may exist in the Islamic society, but it is nothing but the love of death, the eroticization of destruction, the orgasmic involvement in the twilight of the gods.
ISIS videos are staged events. There is no religious rationale, nor is there any Islamic legal reason for them.
The videos, the Tweets, the social networking of death are the Art of Death, and ISIS has taken it to the verge of fine art. Indeed, deaths occur as regularly and as spectacularly as in Game Of Thrones, and we often have trailers and teasers to keep us glued to the tv.
... you get Today's World, all wrapped up in a bow and looking as murderously fine as a rendition of Pope Innocent X by the painter Francis Bacon:
We have all been involved in the communal effort of staging the most monumental IMAX of disaster in the history of mankind.
Deny this Art, and let us step back.
Step back from the hate and anger filled airwaves, and cease painting our world canvas distempered by our conflicts.
Resolve those conflicts, the social, the personal, the economic, the physical, and the spiritual.
Do not let the Film of the end of days ever be released upon a definite date of our scheduling.
I do not think I have ever read Charlie Hebdo.
I suppose I shall now.
I assume it is a weekly magazine, "hebdo" being short for hebdomedaire, meaning "weekly". It is interesting how the Latin picked up the Greek, the Latin "septem" dropping the "s" and turning it into the rough breathing "h", and the breathed "p" becoming the sounded "b" and same thing for the "t" to "d".
Not that interesting, though.
I used to read Bizarre magazine, which was a humor and cartoon magazine published in France - not the Bizarre magazine published by Brits!
Bizarre is a literary and arts review heavily influenced by surrealism...
An example:
There are not many example on the Internet, and this one is not one I was familiar with.
The schoolboy being disciplined is writing "I must not kill little pals" on the chalkboard.
I used to find the old issues in the basement of Assumption College library, and I would go through them 'tween stacks.

After the events in Paris, I am very sad to see that now some people say that Bill Maher is half right, half wrong, whereas before they considered him wrong.
I do not understand.
Did we not expect more violence?
Did we think all terrorism had stopped, and this recrudescence of the terror is so unforeseen that we must stop and re-think?
All religions contain messages of peace and messages of war.
Islam is not alone. Even Buddhism attacks Muslims in Myanmar, and some Hindus attack Muslims in India, whereas in Pakistan it is often open season on everyone.
Again, I repeat that we have gone to war against terrorism with a Pork Barrel Political Agenda, wherein everybody that thinks they have a stake in the matter gets a say in who should be attacked. Most of the big time targets have ended up being non-Al Qa'ida entities... which is the usuall outcome of the Pork Barrel: a bridge to nowhere, a war for no thing!
We must fight terrorism and the intolerant sect of philosophy that bred it, the radical Wahhabi fundamentalism of the Saudi ruling elite.
If we have to even refuse to purchase the cheap oil, then so be it. Those who fight us understand the prices to be paid in their chosen confrontations.
They have made Satan the master of their affairs, and he has taken them as partners. He has laid eggs and hatched them in their bosoms. He creeps and crawls in their laps. He sees through their eyes, and speaks with their tongues. In this way he has led them to sinfulness and adorned for them foul things like the action of one whom Satan has made partner in his domain and speaks untruth through his tongue.
There has been violence in Odessa, and many dead. Young European men in the Baltic States and Poland and possibly other places - having watched and learned terror against governments while watching their evening news - are applying for visas to fight in the Ukraine. They seem to sense a similar fate for their own countries in the future, and have decided to fight it now.
Terrorism is spreading geographically and culturally.
These people may not sit by and watch a resurgence of the Warsaw Pact.
Remember, Chechen rebels still endure in the mountains and we saw a terrorist act at the Boston Marathon last year done by ethnic Chechens, as well as other acts in Russia.
Big Battle of the Dimwits over photos of the remaining Mr. Tsarnaev.
I have been seeing photos of him ever since the bomb went off.
This:
and this:
and now Rolling Stone has run this on the cover:
This has been interpreted as the Dimwits as a "dreamboat" like pic of Mr. Tsarnaev, and it makes terrorism out to be a Double-O-7 type of job, instead of the nasty, brutish, and rarely showering drudgery that Osama bin Laden had made it out to be.
Kids might be fascinated and drawn to the life style.
So now a police photographer has broken his oath of silence - or whatever it is that these so-called professionals have that is so easy to break these days - and has published photos of Mr. Tsarnaev during the Sailboat Chase:
Maybe it's just me, but I think all the photos are Double-Aught-Spy type fascinating, and all of them glorify Mr. Tsarnaev.
The only thing that would not glorify him is a lack of photos, but we can't really do that.
