Same thing happened to our rugby for a while but then they got such a bad rep that they started seriously losing fans so they actually got in there and cleaned up their act. I suppose, in a small nation, it's hard to hide that sort of stuff. (not saying they're perfect by any means but now, if its chargeable, they will be charged).

The situation has to be pretty rank that fans abandon their teams and squads.
I suppose I was lucky in that all the teams connected to me in whatever manner have been pretty mediocre to poor over the past 20 years, and I sort of lost touch, and I do not really have the time, anyway.

Wasn't so much the die hard fans but that the parents (read mothers :) of children wanting to do sport were choosing other sports with better reputations and there are only so many talented children to foster into the game at grass roots. They were losing some serious numbers to soccer at the time.

I understand the problem with the sport's reputation. That is enormous for a mother. I mean, one can hardly object to a child's sketchy friends, yet encourage participation in a sport with a sleazy image.
