Goodbye, Cargo Cult.

I am going to miss the old Cargo Cult philosophy of the USA, It is dying slowly and surely. The next presidential election is called historical for a number of reasons, except the ones that matter: the truly new era in which we shall find ourselves less wealthy, less well off; the era when there is private profits for the rich, and socialized losses for the rest of the country. The old Cargo Cults of Melanesia believed that all those good and material they had seen the airplanes bring to the soldiers serving in WW II and its aftermath had originally been intended for them, sent along by their departed ancestors. The White Man somehow had intercepted the cargo. The Melanesians had built their own airplanes from wood and palm fronds and rope; they did not fly because the White Man had cast a spell over them and stolen their vital spirit. Our Cargo Cult was a more vicious form: we not only let desire for goods rule us, we let ourselves become zombies of the strip malls, soulless and mindless entities. We have discovered our financial institutions made from palm fronds and sand do not work. We shall discover the same about government and religion: all the misleading simulations of life that we created do not work. Mondo Cane.
