As time goes on, I do a little research on gunshot wounds to the head. The word now is that doctors are "optimisitc", which sums it up: they are looking at the bright 5% side. They are not confident or cautious; they are hoping for the best.
Now there may be a Martyr who was demonized by the Right and shown in Palin literature as being a choice target.
There is no one to pull us back anymore, unless it be the President, the Leader of the Senate, and the Speaker of the House. If they do not raise up to the challenge, we shall go down the roads of martyrs, and join in the civil bloodletting of other unhappy nations.
The Speaker has told us of duty and the responsibility to continue on the normal business of the country. That is fine, and no one can argue. But we can point out that Albert Sidney Johnson and William Tecumseh Sherman did not want to make a military career of civil war; that was not business as usual as they envisaged it. But when the call came, they answered and did their best in situations much beyond what would have been their lot in more peaceful times.
All elected officials: if you will not lead, then turn aside lest you impede other men of goodwill, and thus provide an open road for those who hate.
