Ricochet

In the previous post, I used the above photo I titled the Girl Gun Trio and had some of the lyrics of Ricochet. You may remember it from the I Love Lucy show where Marilyn and Rosalyn Borden - as Teensy and Weensy:

who sang Ricochet:

I knew the day I met you, you had a rovin' eye
I thought that I could hold you, what a fool I was to try
You promised you'd be faithful and you would never stray
Then like a rifle bullet, you began to ricochet

[CHORUS:]

And baby
I don't want a ricochet romance, I don't want a ricochet love
If you're careless with your kisses, find another turtle dove
I can't live on ricochet romance, no, no not me
If you're gonna ricochet, baby, I'm gonna set you free
and the record had been released by Teresa Brewer:

Tax Reform: The Deficit Dust Storm Cometh

I am intrigued that Republican politicians are so very gung-ho on tax cuts stimulating the economy. They have the laboratory of Kansas under Republican Governor Brownback to look at and see the disaster his tax cuts have created.
Still, even with experimental data.... ideology precedes verification.

Whether a belief is true or not is irrelevant to its acceptance by a group. What matters is whether the belief is adequately "coherent" with the other previous beliefs the group holds.
It does not matter whether the beliefs are consistent. It does not even matter if they are contradictory. The group merely has to be able to live with the beliefs; the group merely finds them coherent, even though a belief B may be believed true under one set of circumstance - say "in time of war" - and that same belief B may be believed to be false under other circumstances - say "in time of peace".

Republicans believe that tax cuts are the remedy, even if they impoverished Kansas.

One of the excuses Sam Brownback used to explain his colossal failure was that in the early years of his plan some economic bad news beyond Kansas caused problems for the economy of Kansas.

Let's think about that.

Bad luck can always happen. Any good program ought to make provision for the rainy day, regardless of the starry-eyed faith of the ideologues.

When the USA cuts taxes, if there is a recession of modest proportions, there may be a pile of hurt. While we hurt, the tax cutters will maintain faith for a year or more, praying for rain like a Dust Bowl farmer.
Maybe rain; maybe not.

ps.
And for repatriation of corporate profits:
Adam Looney of the Brookings Institution took up the subject Wednesday, arguing that the repatriation of profits won’t help the U.S. economy because the money has already come back: “Given how we talk about these earnings, you could be forgiven for thinking U.S. companies have stashed their cash inside a mattress in France. They haven’t. Most of it is already invested right here in the U.S.”

So It Goes...

CBSMiami.com
LOS ANGELES (CBSMiami) – Fists fly on a Southwest Air flight to California.
The jet had just landed at the Burbank Airport when two men got into it.
“Everyone was deplaning then all heck broke loose,” said Michael Krause...

Airlines have declared war on passengers, and passengers have reciprocated.
There are many unreported incidents, too. Last time we flew after Christmas 2016, there were delays at the Baltimore Airport and hungry, upset people got into it at the McDonald's in the airport, since there were too many customers for the staff to handle.

Sort of scarey.

This decline of ours is scarey. Sheesh! Fights on airplanes are common! For pity sake! What have we gotten into?!

Trump fires the head of the FBI three years into his ten year term, companies and customers declare war, and in case people in charge have not noticed, things are beginning to fall apart. The Republican members of the House vote to essentially deprive millions of health care!
Pretty soon there'll be fights in hospitals!

Palpatine From Palatine...

You recognize the old, old children's rhyme, used by generations of kids skipping rope:

Palpatine from Palatine
pals around with plutocrats!

and so on with its catchy beat: PAL-pa-tine from PAL-a-tine PALS around with PLUT-o-CRATS!

where the last word "plutocrats" is evenly accented on both syllables, but can be sung a bit quicker than the preceding words and sort of brings it all to a close... or not.
I suppose "Palatine" refers to the Palatine Hill in Ancient Roma, a rise in the land where all the Roman swells had their palazzi. All very much wealth, power, Rome - rise as well as decline and fall - and an implication by omission of poverty, marginalized peoples, slaves, and somebody from Nazareth.

It was brought to mind this morning by the headline below:

RedState
Kushner Family Woos Wealthy Chinese Investors With “$500,000 Investor Visas” Pitch
http://www.redstate.com/sweetie15/2017/05/06/kushner-family-woos-wealthy-chinese-investors-500000-investor-visas-pitch/
The EB5 immigrant investor visa program allows wealthy foreign investors to invest in U.S. projects that could create jobs here, and then those investors can apply for citizenship.

Earlier Saturday, the family of Jared Kushner held a presentation in Bejing for the purpose of enticing wealthy Chinese investors to America.

Over several hours of slide shows and presentations, representatives from the Kushner family business urged Chinese citizens gathered at the Ritz-Carlton hotel to consider investing hundreds of thousands of dollars in a New Jersey real estate project to secure what’s known as an investor visa...

I do not mean to imply any wrongdoing to Mr. Jared Kushner. However, I always wonder exactly how long it takes for an entity - like the Roman Empire or the USA - to seriously decline, to allow its laws to fall into desuetude, to restrict the democracy to fewer and fewer, and to hand the state over to the wealthy plutocrats.
According to Gibbon's account of Rome, it took a while. But I read Gibbon when I was in my teens and sitting out on the river sunning my adolescent body, dipping into the cool waters every now and then; O, rise Belisarius! , O, go down Belisarius! ... rise Justinian, rise Irene, go up and come down the Iconoclasts! ... what-ho! and my mind vacillated between the common interests of guys and dolls and the rise and fall of empires!

It is obvious that the country may be handed over to the wealthy very quickly. It is clear that commercial interests of wealthy families and groups may predominate the public forums, and the change may happen within months.

So what took Rome so long?

End-Of-(Some)Times

 General Petraeus
photo: Jason Reed

A very good article on General Petraeus' address to Congress in late January:

The Fiscal Times
Gen. Petraeus: The Post-War Order Is in Danger of Collapse
http://www.thefiscaltimes.com/2017/02/01/Gen-Petraeus-Post-War-Order-Danger-Collapse
...  "Americans should not take the current international order for granted," Petraeus said. "It did not will itself into existence. We created it. Likewise, it is not naturally self-sustaining. We have sustained it. If we stop doing so, it will fray and, eventually, collapse."...

It gives you a good idea what is at stake.

The Grimoire Of Imagination!

Moody Teenaged Nero Listening to Seneca, his Tutor

When I was reading Gibbon's The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, I often wondered what it would be like to have a leader of state who was a child, like Nero who assumed the purple at the age of 17 after the death of Claudius. Seneca, the philosopher, became a tutor to Nero when the future emperor was 12. When Nero became emperor, Seneca became his advisor.

In the year 59, Nero arranged the murder of his mother, Agrippina, and Seneca as imperial advisor was involved in the matricide. Seneca wrote to the Senate exculpating Nero for this crime.

I speak of the Seneca as adopted by Christianity, the Seneca as Stoic Philosopher, attempting to teach Nero moderation. How ghastly it must have been to watch his charge go from crime to even greater crime!
To have a totally out-of-control emperor leading the empire! And to have tutored him for years, only to see his teachings ignored!

Young Nero Being Tutored

In actuality, I think Seneca was a hypocritical scoundrel, who wrote of Philosophy merely as an exercise in rhetoric. Seneca was an obsequious flatterer of an egomaniac, an amoral philanderer, and a man who used his position of power to cheat and steal from those less powerful.

Still he was able to watch his charge, Nero, degenerate and even to partake in his crimes, powerless to even lift a hand in protest. No wonder he as a Stoic, for it made a virtue of his wretched morality.

An unbalanced child-emperor surrounded by scoundrels... I could never think the reality of such a thing in the the grimoire of imagination!

Boss Holocaus'

As chronicled in my post
http://fatherdaughtertalk.blogspot.com/2016/11/im-gonna-wash-that-racism-right-outta.html

From The Jerusalem Post:
http://www.jpost.com/Us-Elections/Donald-Trump/Stephen-Bannon-in-2014-Racism-will-get-washed-out-of-nationalist-right-472760

Stephen Bannon, in a 2014 talk, said racism would eventually get “washed out” of right-wing nationalist movements, and spoke repeatedly of Western society being built on “Judeo-Christian” ideas...

And last week we have seen:

The Forward
White House Insiders ‘Astonished’ by Influence of Trump-Whisperer Stephen Miller
January 27, 2017 By Josh Nathan-Kazis
http://forward.com/fast-forward/361407/white-house-insiders-astonished-by-influence-of-trump-whisperer-stephen-mil/
The White House influence of Stephen Miller and his ally Steve Bannon has “astonished” insiders, according to an unsourced report in Washington journalist Mike Allen’s morning newsletter Axios AM. Miller, who is Jewish, wrote President Donald Trump’s inaugural speech with Bannon, according to Allen’s report. The speech revived Trump’s use of the phrase “America First,” which many Jewish groups decried for its anti-Semitic historical resonance...
and:

The Forward
Trump Doesn’t Mention Jews in Holocaust Remembrance Day Message
January 27, 2017 By Daniel J. Solomon
http://forward.com/fast-forward/361425/trump-doesnt-mention-jews-in-holocaust-remembrance-day-message/
President Donald Trump issued a statement on Friday’s Holocaust Remembrance Day that left some scratching their heads due to its omission of any reference to Jews. “It is with a heavy heart and somber mind that we remember and honor the victims, survivors, and heroes of the Holocaust,” the statement from the White House Press Office read. “It is impossible to fully fathom the depravity and horror inflicted on innocent people by Nazi terror.” The remarks immediately drew criticism from Jewish leaders, including Anti-Defamation League head Jonathan Greenblatt.
1/2 @WhiteHouse statement on #HolocaustMemorialDay, misses that it was six million Jews who perished, not just ‘innocent people’ pic.twitter.com/OXiFqcPi4V— Jonathan Greenblatt (@JGreenblattADL) January 27, 2017...

Maybe the president thought it was his new Patriots' Day and he wished to remember all the people killed in the Second World War. Maybe he thinks WWII - horrible as it undoubtedly was - was sort of a capo di tutti capi, a Boss Holocaus' of all Holocausts?!
(The Shoa being a mere subset of the set of slaughters of innocents...)

So it is abundantly clear that anti-Semitism can be washed out if no one ever mentions "Jewish" again. It is a master stroke of the alt-right and their dupes.
I am impressed by the new bosses.
They are not the same as the old bosses.

Inauguration Day

I saw a number of marching bands, marching in the dark streets, making their way to the reviewing stand. An interesting effect, I thought, and I was glad no band member seemed to have lost their way in the gathering dusk.
As I watched, they rose from the shadows, marched by the light, and went on into the night. It was a metaphor I was not all that fond of. I think I could have done without it. Surely, not everything is a metaphor... or is it? (Did Bishop Berkley ever consider that "to be" is "to be a metaphor"?)

That's all I saw. I do not watch inaugurations and never have. I think I watched President Obama take the oath, but did not stick around for the rest. I did also see Justice Clarence Thomas' severe and jowly face as he administered the oath of office to Mr. Pence. He has a nice voice, but he always seems to be doing a Harriet Tubman impression.

Some people have said Mr. Trump not my president and never will be.
I never did buy into the ritualistic idolatry of the president. I mean, he is elected to serve us and he should work from 7 AM to 7 PM to do so. The question whether he is "mine" or not never, ever entered my consciousness before.

From what I read, Mr. Trump sees himself as the character Bane in the Dark Knight Rises, a figure who is to go to war against all elites - whether Democrat or Republican - and restore power to the "people".

I'm all for it.
The only fly in the ointment so far is that everyone over the past hundred years who has promised power to the people has identified themselves as "the people" and has forced their own personal history and worlding-view upon the rest of the schlubs standing around.

Mr. Trump may find his lack of a real political ideology will work well, preventing him from forcing a non-existent ideology onto the backs of others. However, ideologies are also wonderful short-cuts: when faced with a situation that requires the bravery of Daniel and the wisdom of Solomon - and finding oneself a little short of each that particular day - the best way to "cut to the chase" is to rely on good old ideological belief system which one shares with a bunch of other of the clueless.

Mr. Trump, lacking ideology, will have to create his own coherence that extends beyond merely make America great again.
I mean, a National Patriotism Day! What the heck is that? The 4th of July celebrates a factually real struggle and accomplishment. Patriotism Day?!?! How can you celebrate an abstraction? Maybe you can force people into some "patriotic" mold.

We need something a bit more substantial. I think Mr. Trump knows it.

What Have We Done?

M16

The Independent
Former MI6 agent Christopher Steele's frustration as FBI sat on Donald Trump Russia file for months
Exclusive: Steele was so concerned by revelations he worked without payment after Trump's election victory in November
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/donald-trump-russia-dossier-file-investigation-hacking-christopher-steele-mi6-a7526901.html
Christopher Steele, the former MI6 agent who investigated Donald Trump’s alleged Kremlin links, was so worried by what he was discovering that at the end he was working without pay, The Independent has learned.

Mr Steele also decided to pass on information to both British and American intelligence officials after concluding that such material should not just be in the hands of political opponents of Mr Trump, who had hired his services, but was a matter of national security for both countries.

However, say security sources, Mr Steele became increasingly frustrated that the FBI was failing to take action on the intelligence from others as well as him. He came to believe there was a cover-up, that a cabal within the Bureau blocked a thorough inquiry into Mr Trump, focusing instead on the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails...

...Mr Steele produced a memo, which went to the FBI, stating that Mr Trump’s campaign team had agreed to a Russian request to dilute attention on Moscow’s intervention in Ukraine. Four days later Mr Trump stated that he would recognise Moscow’s annexation of Crimea. A month later officials involved in his campaign asked the Republican party’s election platform to remove a pledge for military assistance to the Ukrainian government against separatist rebels in the east of the country.

Mr Steele claimed that the Trump campaign was taking this path because it was aware that the Russians were hacking Democratic Party emails. No evidence of this has been made public, but the same day that Mr Trump spoke about Crimea he called on the Kremlin to hack Hillary Clinton’s emails...

It's not as bad as it sounds.

The End Of Our Era: the Pornography of Life

Amid Controversy Caitlyn Jenner Gets a 24-Karat-Gold Facial Ahead of Inauguration

https://www.yahoo.com/beauty/amid-controversy-caitlyn-jenner-gets-a-24-karat-gold-facial-ahead-of-inauguration-185530026.html
Caitlyn Jenner’s the newest celebrity confirmed on the roster to attend Trump’s inauguration events in Washington, D.C., next weekend. Over the weekend, Jenner uploaded a selfie of herself getting a luxurious 24-karat-gold facial mask in California, right in time for the upcoming gilded festivities to go down in the nation’s capital.

Jenner’s attendance to the inauguration has been a divisive discussion for many social and advocacy groups. Many cannot understand how Jenner can support President-elect Donald Trump and his policies while still advocating for transgender and women’s rights...

There is a good deal about LGBT politics and so on.
However...!

What if the headline had read:

Amid Controversy Caitlyn Jenner Gets a 24-Karat- Golden  Facial

!!??!!

It gives a whole new meaning to the "P" in "POTUS", doesn't it?

The old ways of behaving are dead, and the baby has -alas! - been thrown out with the bath water, for what is good is gone with the bad. The Future belongs to the purveyors of Pornography :

Pornography of life
Pornography of politics
Pornography of religion

Die Große Lüge, or The Big Loogie

The title is a very loose translation - actually part translation and part sounding-out-words - and totally misleading, but that's the way I like it: not actually false, but misleading in a nice way.

A Happy, Uncomplicated Man...

We are are living in interesting times. That is, if you define "ghastly peril" as "interesting".

We have talked about "fake news".
In its simplest essence, fake news is lying about lying. There is no longer any truth.

Since everything has been or will soon be politicized, the basis for truth will be Coherence to some moronic political agenda of one sort or another. Even Science will bend the knee and "climate change" will be banished... no matter that scientists may utter behind closed doors, "... è ancora caldo."

The basis for true or false in a politicized system is Coherence, not truth nor falsity.

That is the underpinning for the 20th century discovery of The Big Lie.

 A Family Man...

Any lie, no matter how outlandish and bizarre, can be perceived as being true as long as it "coheres" to a set of accepted political beliefs. Therefore, The Big Lie is not false. It is "coherent" and acceptable.
News will be "coherent" or "not-coherent", but it will not be true nor false.
We experience it all the time now. New Media used to strive for objectivity and impartiality, and thus to be "outside" the political arena.

Now the trend is for the media to take up sides and thus become part of the politics itself. From the start of the Republican primary and Trump vs Meghan Kelly the media was part of the message and could not extricate itself - mainly because it did not want to anymore.

China has banned The New York Times and its app from China. You will need to hire a hacker to read The New York Times in China. Since China cannot force The New York Times to "cohere" to its version of the world, it must censor it out of the Chinese environment.
We shall see more of this as time goes on: censorship, resulting in (1) less robust diversity of news and opinion, or (2) the media target may give up and "cohere" after all.

People choose coherence, not truth. People believe in religious dogmas which are coherent to their present dogmas, caring not a wit whether a dogma be true or not. The concept never enters into their thinking.

Soon Justice will be based on Coherence to the party line again.

A Thoughtful, Studious Man...

And nonsense will parade as sense, and Katrina Pierson will be a paradigm
...Katrina Pierson, the former Tea Party activist who is now Donald Trump’s national spokeswoman, admitted on Wednesday that Barack Obama was not the president of the United States in 2004.

The reason it was considered necessary to extract this concession to reality from Pierson is that she had insisted, during an interview with CNN the night before, that President Obama was responsible for the death of Capt. Humayun Khan, an American soldier who was killed in Iraq five years before he became commander in chief.

So then

https://www.yahoo.com/news/zombies-wipe-humans-less-100-134700805.html
A new article in a peer-reviewed student journal finds that the zombie hordes would take Earth's population down to a mere 273 survivors in 100 days.

The paper, published in the University of Leicester's Journal of Physics Special Topics, was a fanciful use of the so-called SIR model, which is used in epidemiology to simulate how diseases spread over time. It's not the first time zombies have been used as a public health metaphor. In December 2015, for example, the British medical journal The Lancet published a tongue-in-cheek paper titled "Zombie infections: epidemiology, treatment, and prevention." And a viral blog post from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urged zombie-apocalypse preparations as a a metaphor for real-life disaster preparedness.

And NASA did not land on the moon. The landings were filmed in a studio.

Why not? I know for a fact - fact! - that some of the better Zombie movies were NOT filmed in a studio, but were real-life docu-dramas!

In The Future, We Shall All Be Brian Williams!

There was a tempest about a year and a half ago about Brian Williams, NBC's news anchorman on the NBC Evening News, having made statements about his time in a war zone that were not exactly correct. Eventually Brian Williams lost his job, NBC apparently thinking that his credibility had been compromised and no one would take him seriously... even when he was reading scripts for the TV cameras.

During this time, two other individuals' stories about reports from war zones or riot zones came up: that of Bill O'Reilly of Fox and that of Hillary Clinton. Both had related stories that seemed to be at variance with what had actually been possible in the place and time they were at.

I may be mistaken, but no one seemed to bring up PTSD, Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome; not even merely how people react after traumatic stress, and personally I think being in a helicopter 2 miles away from where people are shooting rockets at other helicopters, or getting off an airplane and hearing automatic gun fire nearby, or being in a hotel in a foreign city in which a large riot is occurring, to be my definition of traumatic stress.

We are indifferent to how stress affects memory, yet we have mightily striven to change our world into a mill of stress where we are ground between the upper and nether millstones of trauma. So we shall not even recognize our own distress for what it is.
In case you don't know, traumatic stress was a major component in the fall of Ancient Rome. It froze people into social norms that were prisons, it gelled their thoughts into mediocre repetitions of the past, it enslaved them to a state religion that had betrayed its Galilean roots.

We have ignored the stress of people who had the dirty end of the stick during the financial crisis and thereafter, we have ignored the stress of people affected by the Iraq War, we have ignored the stress on those affected by Libya, Syria, and all the other little places we love to destabilize.

Liberals now as well as conservatives are buying guns in record numbers. Our president soon-to-be seems to be on the verge of declaring a Crusade to avenge Berlin's truck terror.  And the Wall Street Journal and the Rupert Murdochs of the world want more war, more instability, and more suffering to fight against the disorder caused by stress; they prescribe more trauma to cure trauma!

Soon our Futures will be as corrupted by trauma as the past of our memories are!

I'm Gonna Wash That Racism Right Outta My Hair !!

Mary Martin as Nellie Forbush in South Pacific

I am glad that I was not sucked into that ghastly I-must-write-about-the-election-because-my-ideas-are so-cogent vortex that sent many a brave hearty to Davey Jones' Locker of post-election hangover.
I mean, I really am.
I would have posted, oh, about 300 posts about the election, and a lot of it would be trivial, just like the discussions of the candidates themselves were trivial beyond belief. Of course, if my sage advice had been printed, perhaps a couple of thousand votes would have swayed the populace into the channels I promoted. Who knows?

I read my last post. It was about that Steve Bannon fellow.

From The Jerusalem Post:
http://www.jpost.com/Us-Elections/Donald-Trump/Stephen-Bannon-in-2014-Racism-will-get-washed-out-of-nationalist-right-472760
Stephen Bannon, in a 2014 talk, said racism would eventually get “washed out” of right-wing nationalist movements, and spoke repeatedly of Western society being built on “Judeo-Christian” ideas.

Bannon, the chairman of President-elect Donald Trump’s campaign who was named this week by Trump to be a top White House adviser, has been accused of being part of a broad movement, the alt-right, which includes racists and anti-Semites. Earlier this year, he called Breitbart News, the website he formerly chaired, a “platform for the alt-right.”

A number of Jewish groups have condemned his hiring, a few defended it and others are silent.

In a question-and-answer session he gave at a conference at the Vatican in 2014, unearthed by Buzzfeed News, Bannon downplayed concerns of anti-Semitism and racism in European right-wing nationalist parties, suggesting that bigots were on the fringes of those movements and would fade away.

“I’m not an expert in this, but it seems that they have had some aspects that may be anti-Semitic or racial,” Bannon said, according to the transcript published by Buzzfeed Tuesday. “Some that are fringe organizations. My point is that over time it all gets kind of washed out, right? People understand what pulls them together, and the people on the margins I think get marginalized more and more.”

Bannon expressed similar sentiments in an interview with the New York Times Tuesday, saying “It’s not that some people on the margins, as in any movement, aren’t bad guys — racists, anti-Semites. But that’s irrelevant.”

Even a cursory reading of history, such as I did in my student years, would have disclosed that Racism was not "washed out" of right-wing nationalist movements in pre-World War II Germany. The contrary happened. The Holocaust happened.

Radical groups can win. The Bolsheviks won in Russia, even though - their name notwithstanding - they were a minority in the country.

Racism is not something that a right-wingish Nellie Forbush can nor will wash out of her hair. Radical racism does not fade away. We thought it would fade away after World War II, yet here it is.

The bad guys are never irrelevant. Mr. Bannon's attitude is a blindness that will work against him.

Further in the article:
In the 2014 Vatican talk, Bannon stressed several times that Western civilization was built on “Judeo-Christian” values.

“If you look at the leaders of capitalism at that time, when capitalism was I believe at its highest flower and spreading its benefits to most of mankind, almost all of those capitalists were strong believers in the Judeo-Christian West,” Bannon said, according to a transcript published by Buzzfeed Tuesday. “They were either active participants in the Jewish faith, they were active participants in the Christians’ faith, and they took their beliefs, and the underpinnings of their beliefs was manifested in the work they did.”

I do not trust anyone who speaks in Vast Generalities:  "Judeo-Christian" values.
Which values? All such values? Surely not every law in the Scriptures of both faiths?! Surely not such blather as "Blessed are the meek." Who believes that "value"?!

Tell me exactly which values. Are your values those which led to the slaughter of the Moabites, and later applied smoothly to the Native Americans? Those are certainly reasonable values, yet most of us today would find them reeking too much of the abyss.

I have found that generalities are the refuge of those who do not know or those who wish to obscure their agenda.

The people in charge for the next 4 years are (a) those who have no conception of working with ideas and refining them into a workable policy - rather they rely on TV spots like taking credit for Ford not moving some work to Mexico; or (b) are those who are members of polarized ideological groups for whom society is a zero-sum game.

Sometimes I wonder if I care anymore.
One sees Confederate flags now in many places. That is an insult to my ancestors who fought for the Union and for the Constitution.

The history lesson that needs to be taught is that many of our ancestors fought in the Union cause and the Confederate flag is the symbol of rebellion, of slavery, and is an insult to the descendants of those brave people.

Radicalism Rises From The Vast Sea Of Indifference

I was talking to Alex, my step-grandson, yesterday. He asked me my opinion of Donald Trump.

I answered that whatever one might say about Mr. Trump, he was not among the leadership who created the present atmosphere which is giving rise to radical views and expressions of anger.
That creation of despair and hate was created by the Bushes (Iraq, Katrina, Afghanistan), Cheneys (Iraq, war profiteering), Clintons (NAFTA), etc. who had not expressly conspired to undermine the well-being of so many citizens, but effectively have done so by their Indifference.

How many people did I hear and how many times did I hear it back 20 years ago that the USA was being transformed into a Service Economy, and the people displaced from jobs in industry would be retrained and get jobs in - oh, I don't know! Say, jobs in programming or what-not.
Back then they would not dare say that they would get jobs flipping burgers, for it would undermine their breezy assurance that all is well.

In reality, how these Times of Change play out is that there is Sound, Fury, and Suffering.
And in time, those who suffered are dead, and can no longer be a drag on the fun.
The rest of mankind puts their gear back on and plays the game.

A particularly interesting example of governmental Indifference is in New Zealand:

BBC
Christchurch earthquake: The battle to rebuild, five years on
By Michael Ertl BBC News 21 February 2016
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-35612298
It has been five years since a major earthquake hit the New Zealand city of Christchurch, but thousands of residents are still waiting for their homes to be repaired or rebuilt.
Several residents have told BBC News that they are "in limbo" and face increasing financial problems after years of delays and disputes about insurance claims.

The insurance industry says a series of aftershocks, and difficulty in working with the government's earthquake agency, has slowed it down.

A magnitude 6.3 quake struck directly under Christchurch at 12:51 on 22 February 2011, killing 185 people and destroying or damaging around 170,000 buildings.

Tom Davies and his wife had to move out of their house in Christchurch's Mt Pleasant suburb when it was declared unsafe two years ago.

"We have cracks you can crawl through, roof leaks, a spring running through the basement, walls leaning downhill, asbestos and electrics that pose a risk of fire or electrocution," he says.

Mr Davies says that five years after the earthquake little progress has been made in settling the insurance claim.

New Zealand has a two-tier insurance system that deals with natural disasters.
The Earthquake Commission (EQC), a government agency, covers damages to residential homes of up to NZ$100,000 (£46,000; $66,000).
More expensive repairs and rebuilds are handled by people's private insurance companies.

The Davies family's claim was handed to its insurance company in February 2014 [sic: probably "2011" is meant]

"Five years on, we are no further forward," Mr Davies says.

Good example of indifference, eh?
The Indifference seems to be Globalized, too. Interesting.

Boney Shwa Wildlife Refuge

I mean, who in their right minds chooses to have an armed stand-off with the entire Federal government at a place called

Bad Luck Wildlife Refuge

or

Misfortune Wildlife Refuge

or maybe

Adversity Park

or, worse,

Protestors'  Misery?

I mean (again),  Malheur means "adversity" or "bad luck" in French, so the Malheur Wildlife Refuge in Oregon is the lastest place I would have gone to on January 2, 2016 to protest.
Just saying.
I would have picked a place like Boney Shwa Wildlife Refuge, properly known as Bonne Choix Wildlife Refuge, since Bonne Choix in Quebec is used for something like "good choice!!"
(We used to go to the Bonne Choix grocery mart in St. Hippolyte, Quebec,  all the time; we'd say we're goin' to the boney shwa, and est-ce que tu désire quelq'chose? or usually you, toi, quelq'chose?)

There was a Mr. Finicum was among the protestors, and he was eventually shot dead by an officer of the law... apparently having forgotten that when guns are outlawed, only outlaws  and  the police will have guns.

I read about the stand-off since Day 1, and it seemed to me Mr. Finicum was a martyr who had found his cause and was in search of his martyrdom,  but forgive me if that is too harsh. It seemed that way to me well before he died. He was a good man and father, but he was intemperate when it came to the Bureau of the Interior's land use policies.

Now we see in the Toledo Blade
http://www.toledoblade.com/Nation/2016/02/10/FBI-says-it-has-surrounded-last-occupiers-at-Oregon-refuge.html
...  The last four armed occupiers of a national wildlife refuge in eastern Oregon said they would turn themselves in Thursday morning after the FBI surrounded them and they yelled at law enforcement officers in armored vehicles to back off and prayed with supporters over an open phone line.

The tense standoff between law enforcement officers and the four occupiers played out on the Internet beginning Wednesday night via a phone line being livestreamed by an acquaintance of occupier David Fry.
Fry, 27, of Blanchester, Ohio, sounded increasingly unraveled as he continually yelled, at times hysterically, at what he said was an FBI negotiator. “You’re going to hell. Kill me. Get it over with,” he said. “We’re innocent people camping at a public facility, and you’re going to murder us.”
“The only way we’re leaving here is dead or without charges,” Fry said, who told the FBI to “get the hell out of Oregon.” ...

"Unraveled" seems to be the right word.

I like the idea of praying over an open phone line.
What is the litany of this technology?
All the Saints of Heaven.... join us in a conference call!
All the holy martyrs...  join us in a conference call!
All the holy angels... join us in a conference call!
and so on.

You need to have been a Catholic back in the mid-20th century to know the right way to intone such a litany: Omnes Sancti, orate pro nobis!

I hope you do not think me to be harsh. Life is harsh... and it's getting harsher.

Baby Names: Marie Pacifique?

Everyone is still working on baby names as February 15th approaches.
This will be our first grandchild. I have called her Zoe, which seems appropriate, as Zoe means "life".

I have been preoccupied. My mind turns only on the potential futures. Terrifically we are immersed in out thoughts, and we ignore the puppet shows of presidential candidates.
(We suspicion they will all implement policies which shall "ice-floe" the elderly anyway, won't they?)

The weather forecast for our drive to Maryland has improved since February 3rd, at which time the GFS models forecast either 1.5 inches rain or 15 inches snow in Maryland. The snow would have been spread out over a number of days, making it more manageable than the previous 31 inches of snow spread out over 36 hours two weeks past, which pretty much was it for the eastern seaboard below the Mason-Dixon line. Schools were out for a week, and municipalities were asking for volunteers to help shovel out bus stops which were piled high with snow.

Back then we all were thinking snow, snow, snow, ... and pregnant ladies traveling to hospitals along roadways covered by 31 inches of snow...
We all were so focused that I think we may be able to handle 15 to 20 inches with aplomb.
It occupied a good portion of the mind. My mother said that she expected to look out the window and sees snow everywhere. She did not see any, because we live up north of Maryland, where there is no snow really, and today the temperature is supposed to reach 48 degrees Fahrenheit, and my seasonal allergies are continuously in some vast legislative tumult about the scope of their powers: the sinuses claim outrage that the bronchial passages are overextending their grasp, while the chthonic powers afflict me with an unexpected satyriasis, and the tinnitus of autumnal hay fevers flows into winter and laughs a metallic chuckle.

I looked for snow every day, also, and there was none. I informed the powers that be that I would accept the 31 inches and shovel out the drives of all the infirm and elderly within a 2 mile radius if they would transfer the powder up our way and keep it away from our daughter.
Until we moved in 2003 I used to shovel out our house, our immediate neighbor's house, and the house of the old lady across the street. I don't think we ever got 31 inches snow, however. We would not have had places to store it.

I hope the baby's name is Mary-something-something. Mary is a fine name. It is powerful and focused. One never goes wrong with a patroness such as Holy Mary.
My wife had an aunt by marriage whose name was Marie Pacifique, whom all the Irish relatives called Aunt Pacifica.
I was thinking along the lines of Mary Pacifica until it dawned on me that all the kids at elementary school would be goofing around, saying

Mary Pacifica! Mare Pacifica!

making a joking pun on the Latin for "Pacific Ocean" :  mare pacifica ,
and what is worse than hazing in Latin? (In my imagination, I already have the child going to a rather snooty school.)

The kids always used to make fun of one of She-who-must-be-obeyed's paternal nephews by changing his name from

Meyer Hans Joachim

into a teasing chant of

Meyer Hansy Waffles!

One must be careful with names.

One Thing To Remember... Tar Candies

Tar Candies Growing from the Asphalt

Information is everywhere and easily available.

Being intelligent beings, we take a great deal of pleasure in processing information, generating belief systems, and generally establishing credos of common sense and how-the-world works.

That's why the cable TV 24-hour/7-days-a-week and the Internet are like colorful, appealing, sweet jujubes made of tar and turpentine: they make us bite, we find they are not quite what they promised to be, and we have the mess stuck in our teeth forever.

Back before 2008, I was all gloom and doom. Very few others were.

Now everyone is gloom and doom, except the people like bank presidents who are interviewed on (1) cable TV, and (2) on the Internet.

Every attitude acts like tar candies, and it is a struggle to find what's really going on. Just as we should not have believed those who in 2008 said the DOW would hit 50,000 - and that right soon - so should we not hearken to those who say the sky is falling now.

Look at the herd mentality that we exhibit.
I mean, is this the species that we really want to have unlimited access to automatic weapons?

--

note:
The "tar candy" was based on the notion of "tar baby", and that concept has become murky as it has been used sometimes in what might be considered racist form over the years.

I wanted to use "tar truffles", but it was too, too, reminiscent of Tartuffe, and I would constantly be wondering why Moliere was popping into my head.... as he seems to be right now.

Mein Kampf

The authorities will print an annotated version of Mein Kampf, and they will speak about it, and they will be interviewed, but they will not allow such attention to be paid to Triumph des Willens.

And that interests me.

For they have control over the printed book... and may amend it to what they wish...
but they have no control over the effect of the film.

We think that we have thing under control, but that is an illusion. I am growing fearful... a bit more than is the norm.
