Gen. Kelly Misremembers

Gen. Kelly After Charlottesville

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/trump-chief-staff-john-kelly-defends-confederate-monuments-n815886

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly waded into the long-simmering dispute over the removal of memorials to Confederate leaders saying in a televised interview on Monday night that "the lack of an ability to compromise led to the Civil War."

In the interview on Fox News' "The Ingraham Angle," host Laura Ingraham asked Kelly about the decision by Christ Church, an Episcopal congregation in the Washington suburb of Alexandria, Virginia, to remove plaques honoring President George Washington and Robert E. Lee, the commander of Confederate forces during the Civil War...

[...]

The following is the full transcript of Kelly's remarks on the removal of Confederate statues:

Well, history's history. And there are certain things in history that were not so good and other things that were very, very good.

I think we make a mistake, though, and as a society, and certainly as individuals, when we take what is today accepted as right and wrong and go back 100, 200, 300 years or more and say, 'What Christopher Columbus did was wrong.'

You know, 500 years later, it's inconceivable to me that you would take what we think now and apply it back then. I think it's just very, very dangerous. I think it shows you just how much of a lack of appreciation of history and what history is.

I would tell you that Robert E. Lee was an honorable man. He was a man that gave up his country to fight for his state, which 150 years ago was more important than country. It was always loyalty to state first back in those days. Now it's different today. But the lack of an ability to compromise led to the Civil War, and men and women of good faith on both sides made their stand where their conscience had them make their stand.

Perhaps it was the fact that Henry Clay, the Great Compromiser, was no longer alive that caused this situation.
However, there was a long history of conflict and compromise. Finally, large portions of both sides of the slavery question grew tired of compromise and decided to take a stand.

It was the inability of the long period of compromise to attain a long-term solution that led to the Civil War. I mean, wasn't Bleeding Kansas born from compromise? By then, compromise that worked in the time of Henry Clay was no longer working. Another answer had to be found, and given the heat of the passions, it was obvious which way the wind was blowing.

The Election of 1860 - which, by the way, has plenty of "False News" : alarming reports of slave rebellions instigated by Northern spies (untrue as it turned out) and the foulest motives ascribed to all the principal figures in the election - was the line in the sand. The South said if a "Black" Republican were elected, then they would consider secession or outright secede. Abraham Lincoln was elected and South Carolina seceded the next month.

Compromise is not a cure-all.
It is an intermediate step to a long-term solution. The Civil War was supposed to be that long-term solution, and it was, at least as regards the Union, for no State would presume to secede nowadays.

Robert E. Lee was in the U.S.Army at the time and when Virginia finally did secede, had to break his oath of allegiance, because he felt he must support his State. His situation was a perfect description of a coherence set of beliefs which contained a contradiction, and it was only when Union was opposed to State that the contradiction became deadly.

My brother and I grew up and shared a bedroom with 2 portraits:  U. S. Grant and Robert E. Lee.
I do not think I would remove either, even now.
It is complex.
It becomes more complex the more you immerse yourself into the history of the USA from the beginnings up to the Civil War.

ps.
create two lists:  trash / not to trash
and list the leaders you would put under each.

I know exactly where I would put Washington and Jefferson, and exactly where I would place Nathaniel Bedford Forrest and  Edmund Ruffin.

Victory Cigar?

The future, the Project History, the making of our lives... it is not disposable, not a throw away. The European Union was founded by people who survived World War II and who had the concerns of the common men and women in their minds.

World peace requires a globalism which eschews elitism, which is a form of globalization we have not yet seen since the early EU.

A World joined in common amity is not a painting by a pseudo-Magritte:  La vraie democratie n'est pas un cigare jetable... true democracy is not a throw-away cigar.

Sometimes The Headline Says It All

Trump Steers into Global Economy Collision Course

U.S. President Donald Trump is currently steering his country into economic isolation. Bodies like the IMF, the G-7 and the G-20 fear for the future of the global financial system. They want Germany to take on a stronger role in standing up to the Americans.
By Christian Reiermann

...

What we see here is the end of the World War II era that our Greatest Generation established, an era which saw the USA and the USSR defeat Germany and Japan and take upon themselves the leading roles in the world.
Part of this new order of things was efforts to ensure that Germany and Japan would not start another war.

There is no way I think Germany wants to start a war.
However, in the newly created vacuum in leadership in the Western world, we see here in the headline above that there is a large group that now suddenly looks to Germany for leadership. It is a most interesting irony, and it may be the most important outcome of the Trump administration.

The IRS, Civil Rights, And Right Wing Politics

reprint

Dr. Bob Jones, Sr.

Evangelical: Religious Right Has Distorted the Faith

by Linda Wertheimer
June 23, 2006 2:20 PM
... Let's remember...that the Religious Right did not come together in response to the Roe [Roe vs Wade on abortion] decision. No, Weyrich insisted, what got us going as a political movement was the attempt on the part of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to rescind the tax-exempt status of Bob Jones University because of its racially discriminatory policies.

Bob Jones University was one target of a broader attempt by the federal government to enforce the provisions of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Several agencies, including the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, had sought to penalize schools for failure to abide by antisegregation provisions. A court case in 1972, Green v. Connally, produced a ruling that any institution that practiced segregation was not, by definition, a charitable institution and, therefore, no longer qualified for tax-exempt standing.

The IRS sought to revoke the tax-exempt status of Bob Jones University in 1975 because the school's regulations forbade interracial dating; African Americans, in fact, had been denied admission altogether until 1971, and it took another four years before unmarried African Americans were allowed to enroll. The university filed suit to retain its tax-exempt status, although that suit would not reach the Supreme Court until 1983 (at which time, the Reagan administration argued in favor of Bob Jones University)...
Then, if you doubt the segregationist attitudes imputed to some Southern "Christians" :
 http://debunkingchristianity.blogspot.com/2008/11/it-truly-does-old-atheists-heart-good_22.html

The inset is from a message the founder of Bob Jones University delivered on April 17, 1960 in response to Brown vs. the Board of Education and its impact on the desegregation of all white colleges and universities. Plus, the fact that, like many whites in the south in the 1940’s, Bob Jones Sr. was a member of the Ku-Klux Klan.

When Dr. Martin Luther King was killed in 1968, the BJU student body cheered in chapel and Dr. Bob Jones, Jr. said he would not fly the university’s flag at half staff to honor this communist agitator.

The following paragraphs were taken form a 32 page booklet sold in the University’s book store in 1972 (when I was a student there) to support the Biblical bases for the University's stand on Biblical racial segregation, a point so strongly believed he even base the inspiration of the Bible on it:

“Now, we folks at Bob Jones University believe that whatever the Bible says is so; and we believe it says certain fundamental things that all Bible-believing Christians accept; but when the Bible speaks clearly about any subject, that settles it. Men do not always agree, because some are dumb-some people are spiritually dumb; but when the Bible is clear, there is not any reason why everybody should not accept it.” (page 1)

“Now, what is the matter? There is an effort today to disturb the established order. Wait a minute. Listen, I am talking straight to you. White folks and colored forks, you listen to me. You cannot run over God’s plan and God’s established order without having trouble. God never meant to have one race. It was not His purpose at all. God has a purpose for each race. God Almighty may have overruled and permitted the slaves to come over to America so that the colored people could be the great missionaries to the Africans. They could have been. The white people in America would have helped pay their way over there. By the hundreds and hundreds they could have gone back to Africa and got the Africans converted after the slavery days were over.” (page 10)

“I want you folks to listen-you white and you colored folks. Do not let these Satanic propagandist fool you. This agitation is not of God. It is of the devil. Do not let people slander God Almighty. God made it plain. God meant for Christian people to treat each other right. … Yes, Paul said, ‘God…hath made of one blood all nations of men…’ All men, to whatever race they may belong, have immortal souls; but all men have mortal bodies, and God fixed the boundaries of the races of the world. Let me repeat that it is no accident that most of the Chinese live in China. It is not an accident that most Japanese live in Japan; and the Africans should have been left in Africa, and the Gospel should have been taken to them as God command His people to do.” (page 13 - 14)

“If we would just listen to the Word of God and not try to overthrow God’s established order, we would not have any trouble. God never meant for America to be a melting pot to rub out the lines between the nations. That was not God’s purpose for this nation. When someone goes to overthrowing His established order and goes around preaching pious sermons about it, that makes me sick - for a man to stand up and preach pious sermons in this country and talk about rubbing out the line between the races - I say it makes me sick.

The trouble today is a Satanic agitation striking back at God’s established order. That is what is making trouble for us.” (page 15)

“Now, you colored people listen to me. If you had not been bought over here and if your grandparents in slavery days had not heard that great preaching, you might not even be a Christian, You might be over there in the jungles of Africa today, unsaved. But you are here in America where you have your own schools and your own churches and your own liberties and your own rights, with certain restrictions that God Almighty put about you - restrictions that are in line with the Word of God.” (page 22)

Born in Sin... Come on in!

Join the Party!
It was Civil Rights that killed the Solidly Democratic South, and given us the Republican Party of today.

We forgot the great and mighty who supported Milo in the past.
In an alt-time-line history, this could be now instead of more than a month ago.

Milo Self-Destructs 2nd part of 3 http://fatherdaughtertalk.blogspot.com/2017/03/milo-self-destructs-2.html

Continued...

Second,  although both right-wing and left-wing political people can be intolerant and abusive and offensive, it seems to me that Right-Wing Radio is a phenomenon that is all on its own, and has a cherished tradition of a generation or more of intemperance and scurrility which far exceeds that of the left-wing.

We often ask whether violent games (like HALO, which I love!) nurture violence behavior in children.
Did it ever dawn on us that intemperate discourse day after day, week after week, might engender some disgusting baneful behavior within those who listen to that discourse?

We don't know the answers, and the questions are vastly important questions, and we decided to run the experiment to see exactly what happens......!  Only we cannot pull the plug on these experiments; we are left to deal with the results which extend in time for years.

Milo was a paradigm of radical right-wing media. The righties embraced him because, although he was a "fag" in their view, he was "their fag!"
And this was perfectly all right with Milo, because he had his eye set on the pay-off.

Milo is a minor sub-plot in the story of a generation of intemperate and hateful vituperation, and the depths to which the hustlers of hate on the right and left will sink to secure what they perceive their goals to be.

I realized this evil had borne forbidden fruit when a Republican, Joe Wilson, yelled out "You lie!" at the President during a State of the Union Speech. All civility had disappeared in the brew of hateful discourse combined with the monster racism from the inner soul.

Joe Wilson

That was an event that would not have been comprehensible to The Greatest Generation, much less to me who was taught to respect others. Yet was it not my generation, the Boomers, who have brought this scourge upon us?
Are we not that Generation of Vipers which slices and dices evil into what is "good for us" and what is "bad for us", thus dividing evil into the licit and illicit? The good is left to a few religious who are yet following God and not Caesar.
(When I look at the above photo I can not get over how awful the Politics Suit and Politics Tie look in their clonelike sameness over and over again. Right down to the lapel pins, all the same, all in the same place: homogenized yet most definitely not pasteurized.)

The story of Milo Yiannopoulos is a story of a generation of vipers.
Everything is connected. Nothing stands apart. The only difference in the way I think from the way most of my friends think is the fact that I have always insisted that every thread of act or thought must be viewed as being part of an entire fabric, not as separate pieces torn off. Everything we do is a part of a general and a personal history. Everything we do in one area had impacts in every area of our lives.

We have allowed ourselves to be blind to the effects of what we do, what we say, and what we allow. We have sown the wind and now reap the storm.

We have reached a point close to that existing in our country before the Civil War, when the differences which divide us no longer are able to be submitted to reasonable argument and compromise.
Although our differences may not seem to be over as important a moral issue as Slavery, we still stand apart like fire eaters, such as John  Brown

and Edmond Ruffin

A country achieves greatness without thinking about it. People do what they must to live and exert their creativity and genius.
When a country begins to fail, then it reflects upon its "glory" and yearns to be great again, for its genius has become jaded and boring, and there are no "industrial revolutions" nor are there "great revivals": there are but little upgrades, a few new bells and whistles, a new preacher on cable TV, a new and exciting TED talk, and a new thing that "goes viral".

Immigration is the documentary of our disease: from the genius and creativity of the influx of immigrants from all over the world creating a vibrant and diverse culture we have now declined to building a Great Wall to protect ourselves from the immigrant hordes and their wretched newness...

Sic transit, eh?

We are on a very bad road.

Milo self-destructs.... and so does the country....
more at 11:00!

Milo Yiannopoulos

As has already been pointed out, it was not intolerance nor intemperate speech nor racism nor the seductive desire of anarchy disguised as politics that did Mr. Y in; no, it was pederasty disguised as pedophilia.

In our political discourse, racism is acceptable apparently, as long as it comes from someone in the right-wing or left-wing media with a college degree.
If you are an outsider with a high school education, you may as well look up the local chapter of the KKK, for your views are not high tone enough yet to secure a book deal from Simon & Schuster.

First, we see the absolute horror of the joining of the concepts of children and sexuality. The horror of racism and intolerance is pretty awful, but not nearly so absolute. For example, Ann Coulter can utter the most outrageous threats and it does not disturb us all that much.
Even the president can type unsubstantiated tirades and we brush it off after a bit of brow furrowing.

Yet we do respond to children.

I have previously said that we do so partially because we are guilt-ridden.
In our superposition of states of Good and Evil - being both at the same time, not falling into sin now and then, and returning to the path of goodness but combining good and evil into our one nature - we are unaware on an unspoken and barely imaged level that we all, all, each and every one of us thought Jon Benet Ramsey was the cutest little lady... until, that is, until someone crossed the line and killed her.... and even then...
(We keep going back to this murder, but we only allow ourselves to see it as a "cold case", police work, a detective story, something to be considered "rationally"... in this we are like the Krell of the film Forbidden Planet, in that we cannot face the monsters from the Id.)

I speak from experience, for I was sexually used as a child by someone in whose charge I was temporarily. I am not clear on the exact age, but it was well before my sixth birthday.

I think of it now like a Harry Potter story:  there are young persons - let's call them Wizards for the sake of brevity - who suddenly stumble upon a powerful secret which at their tender ages sets them apart from just about all of the rest of society. For the rest of the children of their age are Muggles - not in on the powerful secret at all.

The rest of society, those who are older, when they discover this "wizardry", they act like the family of Harry Potter's Uncle Vernon Dursley, and are not only horrified at the perpetrator of the offense, but also shove the victim away to live under the stairs and treat them like pariahs possessed of a shameful magic.

(If you think this is a flippant approach to a serious subject, I can only say that I have thought about it for over 60 years.)

This ends this first section. We have looked at how our horror of pedophilia is greater than our other horrors, yet we still dress up children like sexy adults. We also in our rush to clean ourselves and society punish both the actors and those acted upon. (Although at present we are more intelligent about it than we were 60+ years ago.)

So we have dealt with part 1 of the Milo story, children and sexuality.
The next part of this series will appear in Milo Self-Destructs 3rd part of 3.

Milo Yiannopoulos has resigned from his job at Breitbart News.

Milo Yiannopoulos resigns from Breitbart News
By Kelsey Sutton, Hadas Gold and Peter Sterne
02/21/17 03:12 PM EST
http://www.politico.com/blogs/on-media/2017/02/milo-yiannopoulos-leaves-breitbart-news-235237
Embattled conservative provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos announced on Tuesday that he would resign from Breitbart News, where he was a senior editor.

"I would be wrong to allow my poor choice of words to detract from my colleagues' important reporting, so today I am resigning from Breitbart, effective immediately," Yiannopoulos said in a press release. "This decision is mine alone."

Yiannopoulos addressed his resignation at a press conference in lower Manhattan Tuesday afternoon, arguing that while he believes the tapes that led to his resignation were deceptively edited, he was "certainly guilty of imprecise language."

"To repeat: I do not support child abuse," Yiannopoulos said at the press conference. "I am sorry to other abuse victims who may have interpreted my statements as flippant."
170220-milo-yiannopoulos-getty-1160.jpg

His book, "Dangerous," which was to be published by Simon & Schuster before the company dropped the Breitbart editor on Monday, will be released independently later in 2017, with 10 percent of proceeds to a child abuse charity, he said.

Outside of the meeting space where the presser is being held, a small group of protesters held signs and chanted, while inside, a dozens of reporters from outlets like Reuters and Fox News set up camera crews to capture the action.

Yiannopoulos' comments created tension within Breitbart, with some staffers uncomfortable with how slowly Breitbart leadership was to respond to the controversy surrounding their employee and how little they communicated with staff throughout the weekend. Some threatened to leave if Yiannopoulos stayed...

I have read accounts of the Yiannopoulos' remarks that caused the uproar, and Mr. Yiannopoulos seems to be referring to Ancient Greece and paiderasteia, not to pedophilia. I am guessing at this. I really have no insight into his mind.

We may read about paiderastia - or pederasty, as commonly termed - in Wikipedia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_love
...The most common male-male relationship was paiderasteia, a socially-acknowledged institution in which a mature male (erastēs, the active lover) bonded with or mentored a teen-aged youth[11]:115 (eromenos, the passive lover, or pais, "boy" understood as an endearment and not necessarily a category of age [10]:16[12]). Martin Litchfield West views Greek pederasty as "a substitute for heterosexual love, free contacts between the sexes being restricted by society."[13]...

So Mr. Yiannopoulos probably was referring to this institution, which is known to anyone who has read Plato at least; it is more of an older mentor-younger adolescent relationship which was ritualized. (I believe the erastēs presented the object of his affection with a rooster, which, if accepted, sort of cemented the bonds of amity.)

However, having seen this and understood this, I do not see how substituting pederasty for pedophilia is going to save Mr. Yiannopoulos' bacon.

I have read some defenses, and even though he may have been flippant, brash, a provocateur, and annoying, he most obviously was talking about pederasty - at a minimum - and there is not much of a way around that. I don't think many conservative evangelicals would endorse that bit of causuistry.

We may not be surprised that many of the defenses being mounted for Mr. Yiannopoulos take on the nonsensical tone of political arguments and thereby take a course which makes them completely miss what is going on: the phenomenon of certain parts of Mr. Yiannopoulos' personal history are revealed to us - with implications for others with similar histories - but these defenders choose to ignore the obvious and take refuge in the cave of their own ignorance.

Breitbart editor-in-chief calls Yiannopoulos comments 'indefensible,' but mounts a defense
By Hadas Gold
02/21/17 11:45 AM EST
http://www.politico.com/blogs/on-media/2017/02/breitbart-editor-in-chief-calls-yiannopoulos-comments-indefensible-but-says-theres-context-235226
Breitbart’s editor-in-chief, Alex Marlow, called Milo Yiannopoulos' comments about pedophilia “indefensible,” “troubling” and “upsetting” on the company’s daily radio show Tuesday morning. But Marlow also defended the Breitbart senior editor, columnist and overall provocateur as a victim of a coordinated attack whose “appalling” words needed to be understood in the context of Yiannopoulos’ personal history.
"It was something that was a total surprise to people in the Breitbart organization that there is video that surfaced that appeared to show him justifying sex between an adult and a minor, at least in certain circumstances which was very troubling and upsetting,” Marlow said on the radio show. "He seemed to be speaking from personal experience as a gay man; he also revealed he’s a victim of child abuse himself. He himself told me he’s never had inappropriate contact with a minor since he was an adult. … it’s all very upsetting and something we take very seriously at Breitbart. We’ve been going through things and trying to figure out the best way to handle this, but the bottom line is the comments on the video are not defensible, and I think most people [agree] with that.”

It’s not clear what Yiannopoulos' future with Breitbart will look like. While Marlow condemned Yiannopoulos' comments about pedophilia, he said the left has done much worse...

... While Marlow called out Yiannopoulos' comments as “troubling,” he emphasized the “context’ In which the comments were made, including Yiannopoulos' own history and that Yiannopoulos’ comments were “merely words” compared to what those on “the left” have done, mentioning people like actress Lena Dunham and filmmaker Roman Polanski.

"We have many examples on the left who have admitted to statutory rape; Lena Dunham had in her book touching her sister’s private parts as a child; you have Roman Polanski; you have millions of examples of the left of normalizing behavior, similar to what Milo described,” Marlow said. "There’s no evidence Milo has been a predator, and so I do think that is also very important context.”

Marlow also suggested the video reemerging was part of a “coordinated hit.” The video, filmed in the summer of 2016, was resurfaced over the weekend by the blog and Twitter account “The Reagan Battalion.” ...

This is a very poor defense combining the pornographic with the irrelevant and leading us to believe that Breitbart as a whole seems to have something wrong with their heads... if not other parts. Whether it was part of a coordinated hit or not is totally immaterial to the endorsement of pederasty.

The illogical reference to a book written by the actress, Lena Dunham, who is not a political and social provocateur, a description of The Divine Mr. Y

The Divine Miss M, for example

that Breitbart and Mr. Yiannopoulos are fond of using to describe Mr. Y, points to the fact that the people here involved are totally missing the most important facet of this phenomenon, which is Mr. Yiannopoulos' self destruction.

Why did he do it?
Did he not know that conservatives were unlikely (1) to be able to distinguish pedophilia from pederasty, or (2) to be able to countenance pederasty itself?
I believe that strictly speaking, Jerry Sandusky was guilty of pederasty, and that man is in jail.
So what did Mr. Y expect?

I have more to say on this and will so soon.

The Grey Mech Cometh

This morning I woke about 4:30, got up made coffee, thought of somethings I had to do, then sat down to watch the rest of Terminator: Genysis. I do not quite understand the continuous softening of Sarah Connor in the series of movies, but it was OK.

I mean, the whole time-travel-paradox thing with an evil John Connor lost me at the first turn in the time maze and I really did not understand a word of the patter the characters spoke about "future so-and-so" and "in the past so-and-so"... so much was my befuddlement that Skynet himself became more like a pantomime horse in the sky...

zipping through various incarnations, or immetallations, or implasmations of newer and more advanced terminator entities.
So I did not seek to understand.

Furthermmore, there was a sub-plot of Sarah and John's father-to-be and romance, but any romance was always preceded by (1) strategy sessions, or (2) tactical discussions, or (3) meditations on time-travel paradoxes of Skynet and related devices.

I liked it. I do not sit through films I don't like. I like Terminator films. Period.
Yesterday I watched The Queen of Katwe, and I liked that, too, and I always like Mira Nair's films.

After finishing with Terminator: Genysis, I took in a few blinks-worth of Suicide Squad - I figure I'll watch about 15 minutes per day to keep the evil from boiling over - and then I went to the good old computer, thinking I would be greeted with a few laughs about the new administration.

Fate, had something else in mind.

Steve Bannon Believes The Apocalypse Is Coming And War Is Inevitable
Trump’s top adviser thinks we’re in “the great Fourth Turning in American history.”
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/steve-bannon-apocalypse_us_5898f02ee4b040613138a951?ref=yfp
... In Bannon’s view, we are in the midst of an existential war, and everything is a part of that conflict. Treaties must be torn up, enemies named, culture changed. Global conflagration, should it occur, would only prove the theory correct. For Bannon, the Fourth Turning has arrived. The Grey Champion, a messianic strongman figure, may have already emerged. The apocalypse is now...

... Strauss and Howe’s theory [which theory is the view held by Mr. Bannon] is based on a series of generational archetypes — the Artists, the Prophets, the Nomads and the Heroes — that sound like they were pulled from a dystopian young adult fiction series. Each complete four-part cycle, or saeculum, takes about 80 to 100 years, in Strauss and Howe’s reckoning. The Fourth Turning, which the authors published in 1997, focuses on the final, apocalyptic part of the cycle.

Strauss and Howe postulate that during this Fourth Turning crisis, an unexpected leader will emerge from an older generation to lead the nation, and what they call the “Hero” generation (in this case, millennials), to a new order. This person is known as the Grey Champion. An election or another event — perhaps a war — will bring this person to power, and their regime will rule throughout the crisis...

I was not entirely honest with you about this morning.
Before I had gotten out of bed, I was thinking of fears and flight; I was thinking of the things that haunt my mind and bedevil me; I was thinking of the strange imaginings that sometimes sap my strength in the marches of the night...
Then I got up made coffee, thought of somethings I had to do, then sat down to watch the rest of Terminator: Genysis. I do not quite understand the continuous softening of Sarah Connor in the series of movies, but it was OK...

I have mentioned I often was oppressed by a vision of a future dystopic. This was back in the 80s and before, well before most of the modern day bleak future visions, but not before Brave New World, 1984, and A Chronicle for Leibowitz.

I knew such things were madness, because I lived in the USA, powerful, wealthy, religious.
And since the turn of the century, I saw 9/11, the 2008 Financial Crisis during which you could see how nervous the President and the Treasury Secretary were on TV, and I have now seen the abomination of desolation in the holy place....

I hope to God the Bannon article is nonsense, for the idolatry of one's own mind in pretending to know the infinite mind of God is spiritual death.

The Grimoire Of Imagination!

Moody Teenaged Nero Listening to Seneca, his Tutor

When I was reading Gibbon's The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, I often wondered what it would be like to have a leader of state who was a child, like Nero who assumed the purple at the age of 17 after the death of Claudius. Seneca, the philosopher, became a tutor to Nero when the future emperor was 12. When Nero became emperor, Seneca became his advisor.

In the year 59, Nero arranged the murder of his mother, Agrippina, and Seneca as imperial advisor was involved in the matricide. Seneca wrote to the Senate exculpating Nero for this crime.

I speak of the Seneca as adopted by Christianity, the Seneca as Stoic Philosopher, attempting to teach Nero moderation. How ghastly it must have been to watch his charge go from crime to even greater crime!
To have a totally out-of-control emperor leading the empire! And to have tutored him for years, only to see his teachings ignored!

Young Nero Being Tutored

In actuality, I think Seneca was a hypocritical scoundrel, who wrote of Philosophy merely as an exercise in rhetoric. Seneca was an obsequious flatterer of an egomaniac, an amoral philanderer, and a man who used his position of power to cheat and steal from those less powerful.

Still he was able to watch his charge, Nero, degenerate and even to partake in his crimes, powerless to even lift a hand in protest. No wonder he as a Stoic, for it made a virtue of his wretched morality.

An unbalanced child-emperor surrounded by scoundrels... I could never think the reality of such a thing in the the grimoire of imagination!

Trump's Version Of Exodust... So Sad

Boss Holocaus'

In which Trump takes on the Holocaust and straightens that bad boy out!

White House calls outrage over omitting Jews in Trump’s statement on Holocaust ‘pathetic’
https://www.yahoo.com/news/white-house-calls-outrage-over-omitting-jews-in-trumps-statement-on-holocaust-pathetic-200020585.html
The White House says President Trump is aware of some of the criticism from the American Jewish community over the omission of Jews in his statement on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, but White House press secretary Sean Spicer called the controversy “ridiculous” and “pathetic.”

“He’s aware of what people have been saying, but I think by and large he’s been praised for it,” Spicer told reporters at his daily briefing on Monday.

“The president recognized the tremendous loss of life that came from the Holocaust,” Spicer said. “To suggest otherwise, I mean, I’ve got to be honest: The president went out of his way to acknowledge the Holocaust.”

[..]

Trump’s six-sentence statement, issued by the White House on Friday, honored “victims, survivors [and] heroes of the Holocaust,” but made no specific mention of Jews:

Let's get it straight. Trump said 6 sentences on the Holocaust, one sentence per million Jewish lives lost. Modesty forbade him from using the word "Jew" or "Jewish"

It is with a heavy heart and somber mind that we remember and honor the victims, survivors, heroes of the Holocaust. It is impossible to fully fathom the depravity and horror inflicted on innocent people by Nazi terror.

Yet, we know that in the darkest hours of humanity, light shines the brightest...

Possibly he is thinking of Life Is Beautiful by Roberto Benigni:

‎

As we remember those who died, we are deeply grateful to those who risked their lives to save the innocent.

In the name of the perished, I pledge to do everything in my power throughout my Presidency, and my life, to ensure that the forces of evil never again defeat the powers of good. Together, we will make love and tolerance prevalent throughout the world.
Spicer said the statement “was written by an individual who is both Jewish and a descendant of Holocaust survivors.”
Yet there is no mention of the centrality of this event to modern Jewish life. The Holocaust has become a definiens of  Judaism from the 20th century on. Just as Exodus and the Babylonian Exile defined Jewish life in their times and into the future, so also the Holocaust, yet the Trump and his crowd show absolutely no grasp of that fact.

On the Rivers of Babylon,  Ephraim Moses Lilien

“The Final Solution was aimed solely at the Jews,” John Podhoretz, a conservative columnist, wrote in Commentary magazine. “The Holocaust was about the Jews. There is no ‘proud’ way to offer a remembrance of the Holocaust that does not reflect that simple, awful, world-historical fact. To universalize it to ‘all those who suffered’ is to scrub the Holocaust of its meaning.”

On NBC’s “Meet the Press” Sunday, White House chief of staff Reince Priebus was asked by host Chuck Todd if the administration was effectively whitewashing anti-Semitism.
“I’m not whitewashing anything, Chuck,” Priebus said. “It’s a terrible time in history. And obviously I think you know that President Trump has dear family members that are Jewish. And there was no harm or ill-will or offense intended by any of that.”
Trump has family members that are Jewish... so what? How does that fact gloss over the omission? Did he mean to say that having a Jewish member of his family sort of evens up the score, Holocaust-wise? Who knows what the imbecilic sycophants around Trump mean?
Jonathan Greenblatt, chief executive and national director of the Anti-Defamation League, blasted Trump for “overlooking the defining aspect of Holocaust Remembrance Day — the horror that befell the Jewish people.”

[...]
Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine was equally critical. “This is what Holocaust denial is,” Kaine said on “Meet the Press.” “It’s either to deny that it happened or many Holocaust deniers acknowledge, ‘Oh, yeah, people were killed. But it was a lot of innocent people. Jews weren’t targeted.’ The fact that they did that and imposed this religious test against Muslims in the executive orders on the same day, this is not a coincidence.” ...

So, in honor of Trump, Spicer, Priebus, Miller, Bannon, et al. I present the Trump Era version of

The 10 Commandments
Piece of Toast Upon which Trump Staff Claim to See the Boss of the Old- Timey Slave Brick Makers

The Exodust book tells how some guys and dolls who made awesome bricks for Boss Egypt King leave slavery in Egypt through the strength of some god who has chosen the incredible slave brick makers. Led by the brick makers Boss, they journey through the wilderness, where their god promises some real estate for development. The brick makers and slaves and their women enter into a covenant with their god who gives them their laws and instructions to build a temple, the means by which the god will come here from heaven and dwell with them and lead them in a holy war to possess the land, and then give them peace, and lots of other phenomenal stuff.

Oh, and that great guy who was the Boss brick guy literally split the Red Sea. I mean, divided that baby in two. And then they walked through it.... on the sand, not through the water...
Huge!

Boss Holocaus'

As chronicled in my post
http://fatherdaughtertalk.blogspot.com/2016/11/im-gonna-wash-that-racism-right-outta.html

From The Jerusalem Post:
http://www.jpost.com/Us-Elections/Donald-Trump/Stephen-Bannon-in-2014-Racism-will-get-washed-out-of-nationalist-right-472760

Stephen Bannon, in a 2014 talk, said racism would eventually get “washed out” of right-wing nationalist movements, and spoke repeatedly of Western society being built on “Judeo-Christian” ideas...

And last week we have seen:

White House Insiders ‘Astonished’ by Influence of Trump-Whisperer Stephen Miller
January 27, 2017 By Josh Nathan-Kazis
http://forward.com/fast-forward/361407/white-house-insiders-astonished-by-influence-of-trump-whisperer-stephen-mil/
The White House influence of Stephen Miller and his ally Steve Bannon has “astonished” insiders, according to an unsourced report in Washington journalist Mike Allen’s morning newsletter Axios AM. Miller, who is Jewish, wrote President Donald Trump’s inaugural speech with Bannon, according to Allen’s report. The speech revived Trump’s use of the phrase “America First,” which many Jewish groups decried for its anti-Semitic historical resonance...

Trump Doesn’t Mention Jews in Holocaust Remembrance Day Message
January 27, 2017 By Daniel J. Solomon
http://forward.com/fast-forward/361425/trump-doesnt-mention-jews-in-holocaust-remembrance-day-message/
President Donald Trump issued a statement on Friday’s Holocaust Remembrance Day that left some scratching their heads due to its omission of any reference to Jews. “It is with a heavy heart and somber mind that we remember and honor the victims, survivors, and heroes of the Holocaust,” the statement from the White House Press Office read. “It is impossible to fully fathom the depravity and horror inflicted on innocent people by Nazi terror.” The remarks immediately drew criticism from Jewish leaders, including Anti-Defamation League head Jonathan Greenblatt.
1/2 @WhiteHouse statement on #HolocaustMemorialDay, misses that it was six million Jews who perished, not just ‘innocent people’ pic.twitter.com/OXiFqcPi4V— Jonathan Greenblatt (@JGreenblattADL) January 27, 2017...

Maybe the president thought it was his new Patriots' Day and he wished to remember all the people killed in the Second World War. Maybe he thinks WWII - horrible as it undoubtedly was - was sort of a capo di tutti capi, a Boss Holocaus' of all Holocausts?!
(The Shoa being a mere subset of the set of slaughters of innocents...)

So it is abundantly clear that anti-Semitism can be washed out if no one ever mentions "Jewish" again. It is a master stroke of the alt-right and their dupes.
I am impressed by the new bosses.
They are not the same as the old bosses.

Trump's Free Lunches

Mr. Trump thinks that we should of grabbed the oil when we had it in our hands:
"We should have kept the oil when we got out. And you know, it's very interesting. Had we taken the oil, you wouldn't have ISIS, because they fuel themselves with the oil. That's where they got the money," the President told ABC's David Muir.
Apparently the genesis of ISIS was similar to venture capitalists and seed money for new industries, like Terror Associates, LLC.

Likewise, force some other schlimazel country to pay for building a wall (probably with its own oil revenues), as seen in the photo above.

I am sure that numerous times in his life, Mr. Trump has repeated the old adage, "There's no such thing as a free lunch!"
And apparently numerous times in his life - such as those two noted above - Mr. Trump fervently believes in a free lunch, bought with the money and resources of other people.

So contradictory.

Inauguration Day

I saw a number of marching bands, marching in the dark streets, making their way to the reviewing stand. An interesting effect, I thought, and I was glad no band member seemed to have lost their way in the gathering dusk.
As I watched, they rose from the shadows, marched by the light, and went on into the night. It was a metaphor I was not all that fond of. I think I could have done without it. Surely, not everything is a metaphor... or is it? (Did Bishop Berkley ever consider that "to be" is "to be a metaphor"?)

That's all I saw. I do not watch inaugurations and never have. I think I watched President Obama take the oath, but did not stick around for the rest. I did also see Justice Clarence Thomas' severe and jowly face as he administered the oath of office to Mr. Pence. He has a nice voice, but he always seems to be doing a Harriet Tubman impression.

Some people have said Mr. Trump not my president and never will be.
I never did buy into the ritualistic idolatry of the president. I mean, he is elected to serve us and he should work from 7 AM to 7 PM to do so. The question whether he is "mine" or not never, ever entered my consciousness before.

From what I read, Mr. Trump sees himself as the character Bane in the Dark Knight Rises, a figure who is to go to war against all elites - whether Democrat or Republican - and restore power to the "people".

I'm all for it.
The only fly in the ointment so far is that everyone over the past hundred years who has promised power to the people has identified themselves as "the people" and has forced their own personal history and worlding-view upon the rest of the schlubs standing around.

Mr. Trump may find his lack of a real political ideology will work well, preventing him from forcing a non-existent ideology onto the backs of others. However, ideologies are also wonderful short-cuts: when faced with a situation that requires the bravery of Daniel and the wisdom of Solomon - and finding oneself a little short of each that particular day - the best way to "cut to the chase" is to rely on good old ideological belief system which one shares with a bunch of other of the clueless.

Mr. Trump, lacking ideology, will have to create his own coherence that extends beyond merely make America great again.
I mean, a National Patriotism Day! What the heck is that? The 4th of July celebrates a factually real struggle and accomplishment. Patriotism Day?!?! How can you celebrate an abstraction? Maybe you can force people into some "patriotic" mold.

We need something a bit more substantial. I think Mr. Trump knows it.

Health Exchanges For Judaeo-Christian Values

Four horsemen riding, riding, riding to my chamber door...
We come to kill your health care... nothing More!
Poe

I have decided to adopt this wonderful drawing as my metaphoric representation of the US Congress, for it works on so many levels. As previously mentioned, the Congress has had a tendency to act as the stable boys and grounds keepers at some hunt club frequented by the Night Breed.

So it comes as no surprise that Republicans - being rational actors, although their rationality is tainted by a severe strain of dubious ideology - would go about reconfiguring health care and repealing the ACA (ObamaCare) in a way that is "rational"... meaning that some people (think of them like salami) will be "left behind" (think of the salami hitting the fan).

It was obvious to anybody.
They have neither the motivation nor the charity nor the brains to effect such a change, as I said previously.
http://fatherdaughtertalk.blogspot.com/2017/01/the-four-horsemen-of-individual-health.html

On health care, Republicans consider the meaning of ‘everybody’
01/18/17 09:20 AM—Updated 01/18/17 10:41 AM
By Steve Benen
http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/health-care-republicans-consider-the-meaning-everybody?ref=yfp
Congressional Republicans recently conceded among themselves that they’ll “never” be able to craft a health-care reform plan that covers “as many people as Obamacare does.” No one, however, told Donald Trump.

The president-elect boasted to the Washington Post this week, “We’re going to have insurance for everybody. There was a philosophy in some circles that if you can’t pay for it, you don’t get it. That’s not going to happen with us.” Trump added that Americans “can expect to have great health care…. Much less expensive and much better.”

The benchmarks, which Trump has no idea how to meet, were fairly specific: his administration is committing to universal coverage, “much lower deductibles,” and a simpler and less expensive system in which all Americans are “beautifully covered.”

Was Trump over-promising? Yes. Will he fail to meet his own goals? Definitely.

The funny part, however, is watching Republicans deal with the consequences of the incoming president’s rhetoric. BuzzFeed had this report late yesterday:

[S]ome Republicans in the Senate say they are working on repealing and replacing Obamacare under the belief that Trump misspoke.

Ah yes, the misstatement. The incoming president assured the American public that the Affordable Care Act will be repealed and replaced with a system in which “everybody” has insurance, to which GOP lawmakers are effectively responding, “Let’s assume he didn’t actually mean ‘everybody.’”

[...]

Mr. Trump and Mr. Pence Flanking the Head Horseman

Rational actors...
Very soon, the "invisible hand" of political markets will move and write
Mene, mene  tekel upharsin

In the disaster of the Republicans we will all come to grief.
And art anticipates life again, as we note that "left behind" and "left out" are the same thing, and an imaginary moral taint will accrue to those without health care....

I mean, they must be seen as inferiors and not deserving of health care, for how else could we live with our "Judaeo-Christian" selves?

--

note:
From the same op.cit. above we see:
...All of which brings us to the larger problem of what Trump’s aides and allies do when the president-elect says something problematic or demonstrably false. As Corey Lewandowski put it a while back, voters “understood that sometimes, when you have a conversation with people, whether it’s around the dinner table or at a bar, you’re going to say things, and sometimes you don’t have all the facts to back it up.”

A member of Trump’s transition team added in December that Americans should take the president-elect’s rhetoric “symbolically,” not literally. Kellyanne Conway said last week that Americans shouldn’t necessarily “go with what’s come out of his mouth,” but rather, we should “look at what’s in his heart.”...
It is hard to know what to say when confronted by this magnitude of claptrap.

I read Mr. Lewandowski's statement as something like talk about the weather:
"Ah, yup. That there health care is mighty fine, but it is Michigan, so just wait a few minutes 'n' she'll change!  Yup."
As for Ms. Conway's statement, it is not Mr. Trump's heart that gives us the shivers. It is the withered hearts of the Congress.

What Have We Done?

The Independent
Former MI6 agent Christopher Steele's frustration as FBI sat on Donald Trump Russia file for months
Exclusive: Steele was so concerned by revelations he worked without payment after Trump's election victory in November
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/donald-trump-russia-dossier-file-investigation-hacking-christopher-steele-mi6-a7526901.html
Christopher Steele, the former MI6 agent who investigated Donald Trump’s alleged Kremlin links, was so worried by what he was discovering that at the end he was working without pay, The Independent has learned.

Mr Steele also decided to pass on information to both British and American intelligence officials after concluding that such material should not just be in the hands of political opponents of Mr Trump, who had hired his services, but was a matter of national security for both countries.

However, say security sources, Mr Steele became increasingly frustrated that the FBI was failing to take action on the intelligence from others as well as him. He came to believe there was a cover-up, that a cabal within the Bureau blocked a thorough inquiry into Mr Trump, focusing instead on the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails...

...Mr Steele produced a memo, which went to the FBI, stating that Mr Trump’s campaign team had agreed to a Russian request to dilute attention on Moscow’s intervention in Ukraine. Four days later Mr Trump stated that he would recognise Moscow’s annexation of Crimea. A month later officials involved in his campaign asked the Republican party’s election platform to remove a pledge for military assistance to the Ukrainian government against separatist rebels in the east of the country.

Mr Steele claimed that the Trump campaign was taking this path because it was aware that the Russians were hacking Democratic Party emails. No evidence of this has been made public, but the same day that Mr Trump spoke about Crimea he called on the Kremlin to hack Hillary Clinton’s emails...

It's not as bad as it sounds.

The End Of Our Era: the Pornography of Life

Amid Controversy Caitlyn Jenner Gets a 24-Karat-Gold Facial Ahead of Inauguration

Caitlyn Jenner’s the newest celebrity confirmed on the roster to attend Trump’s inauguration events in Washington, D.C., next weekend. Over the weekend, Jenner uploaded a selfie of herself getting a luxurious 24-karat-gold facial mask in California, right in time for the upcoming gilded festivities to go down in the nation’s capital.

Jenner’s attendance to the inauguration has been a divisive discussion for many social and advocacy groups. Many cannot understand how Jenner can support President-elect Donald Trump and his policies while still advocating for transgender and women’s rights...

There is a good deal about LGBT politics and so on.
However...!

What if the headline had read:

!!??!!

It gives a whole new meaning to the "P" in "POTUS", doesn't it?

The old ways of behaving are dead, and the baby has -alas! - been thrown out with the bath water, for what is good is gone with the bad. The Future belongs to the purveyors of Pornography :

The Problem With The ACA (Obama Care)

The Republicans think they can repeal the ACA and slip in a replacement that is even better (!?!?) without any problems. I do not have any idea how they can believe this, since they do not have the replacement for the ACA - or Obama Care - outlined yet, so they really are going totally on Political Faith.
A great example of religion and politics being pretty much the same type of behaviors, great emotions, intense desires, vast hopes, and all summed up in some sort of ideological dogmatic.

I think I'm going to enjoy it. Not because they are going to mess up the health care system. I don't think I'll enjoy that. But I will enjoy being right in on the beginning of the end.

Point 1

The ACA was based on a lot of work, much of it Mitt Romney's in Massachusetts. Basic changes such as not requiring everyone to have health care insurance will destroy the nation's Health Care Insurance system as surely as our continued benign neglect destroys the nation's infrastructure.

Any workable replacement that is not a bad joke will resemble Massachusetts health insurance system and the ACA.
Any workable replacement of Obama Care will be (in essence) Obama Care.
And everyone will know it.

Point 2

If there is a disaster in the nation's health care system, Mr. Trump will loudly and clearly blame the Republican party, a party which did not much want him in the first place.
This will turn the Republican party into a  minority party of the wealthy, while the rest of the people who voted for Mr. Trump will continue to do so.

Then he will attack the Democrats. However, I'm not so sure they will self-destruct like the Republicans are going to do.

This will be bigger than the Super Bowl.

The Way We Speak

note: I came across an old post and it struck me that is describes a game that captures modern ways of talking in public, on TV, on the radio, and - most importantly - it sounds like the speech of politicians and people who run for president.

This game is the second game described - not the first game which I thought was a terrific hoot, but no one seemed to understand! - and involves finding posts with comment sections and just mixing up the two sets of comments.
----------------------------------

Truth or Comment
published 05/30/2015

The Last Of The Mohicans
Russel Means and Wes Studi

New game.
Brilliant. Just made it up.

I hope it does better than my last one, which was based on guessing an individual and a movie, all based upon (1) a vague description of the individual and a (2) correlated something from a movie which had a connection, no matter how tenuous, to the individual.
I do not think I even got so far as to have a name for it.

For example, I had a friend who did contract work in Kentucky for a while, so the clue was "guy who worked in Ken-tuck-eee".

Now all the syllables in "Ken-tuck-eee" had the same flat accent on them, and if we were really doing well, it would be delivered in the voice of Daniel Day Lewis. Then it is obvious that the film is The Last Of The Mohicans. (Many of the native American languages do not have the same type of accentuation that we may be used to.)
Assuming we guessed the guy who did the contract work, we got everything at that point.

The only problem was I tried this game out on the guy who himself did the contract work in Ken-tuck-eee, and who had seen the film The Last Of The Mohicans, and he drew a total blank. I mean, he did not have a clue.
I mean, he said he did not know anyone who did any work in Kentucky for a week, then came home for the weekend, then returned Mondays. Since this is what he himself had done, it was perplexing. I think the movie section frightened him.

I don't know exactly what his mental processes were, but apparently they were something like:

"These are not the way of the Huron. Magwa does not understand this nonsense."

**

This new game is much simpler.

Truth or Comment?

Just open up two or three different stories in newsie sites that let the readers comment.
Then take the comments and mix them up.

Thus, we have drought, water, rivers, blah-blah-blah, and money, banks, government, IRS, FBI, yadda-yadda-yadda...

This results in

Comments:
a) I seldom use my credit card unless I am buying something online or large like appliances, furnace, air conditioner. I usually pull out a $1000 to $5000 at the beginning of the month depending on what I intend to spend money on that month. Based on this article looks like I am going to have to keep records of how I spend every dime.
b)  Start by drinking your own pee..
c)  That's what your tax forms are for...

d)  bad idea.. pee is full of toxins that your body is excreting. urea is one. now if you had access to a still you could probably distill your pee and extract pure water from it....

e)  This is not freedom. It is close monitoring by a government who wants to know who you call, email, text, and how much money you have and where you spend it.
This is slavery, but the slaves don't know they are slaves.

f)  Hillbillies have a leg up on the competition....

The only problem with this game is that it begins to sound strangely like cable TV and radio talk shows.
Instead of being some sort of "Mad-libs" craziness, it reminds us of our TV shows and Government officials.

Scarey.

We weren't going for scarey, but it'll work.

You see? It is just like what passes for civil discourse in Oceania and Airstrip One.
