Some brainy cove at The Globalist compares Jon Stewart to the cabarets of Berlin, and the Weimar Republic (by implication) to some other country we all know. He acknowledges the parallel is far-fetched, then perhaps it is not.

Fascism requires a theoretical structure. Consider the KKK: it was on the road, well on the road. Combine the KKK with the science of the American Eugenics Society of the early 20th C. - throw in some business and military support - and you'd have a pretty good native-born fascist regime.
But now?! I don't know.
Look for the structure. Look beyond the violence for an ideal structure to form the exoskeleton of the faithful. Hmmm. There is now a very, very Richard III type of philosopher: Ayn Rand, avaiable.... and I know for a fact that dogs did indeed bark at her (in the later years) as she halted by!

I have not the slightest doubt that in some extremity not yet imagined this country would gladly embrace fascist leadership. No doubt at all. And people like us would be the first to go to the camps.
You know, perhaps the Tea Party is not a party at all, but the future Brown Shirts. That role actually fits them quite well.
