I do not have a smart phone. I do not like paying a bunch of money, my friends are closely chosen to be such as to not give rise to a desire to talk with them frequently, and I do not like some corporation following my every movement...

A true rebel you are, sir. I would chuck my smart phone long before I'd get rid of the iPad, which, I must confess, is quite addictive. And truth be told, I'd like to have an iPhone. Reason is, nobody but my kids and wife ever call me. I don't have your challenge with friends.
If I travel to Venice, I'll get one with a GPS program, otherwise, no.
And friends! When I email my friends, I have started calling them "Wilson" and I sign as "House", but none of them knows what I am referring to!
