Marriage reflects the spiritual reality that TWO is the minimum size group for the human intellect and spirit to properly function within..., not ONE.
ONE causes problems. Any establishment that emphasizes individuality - such as Roman Catholic celibacy for its priests - makes sure that there is always a SECOND mind readily available: a confessor, a mentor, or some such entity.
The maximum size is harder to establish, and it is not necessarily based solely upon the number of individuals, but also upon the spiritual and mental states of those individuals.
For example, if a small group of people begins to show signs of the emergence of Power and its investiture within a set group of Leaders, that group has exceeded its spiritual standards.
